🍁 September Homeowner Check: How’s Your Septic System Doing?

Before fall gets busy, take a minute to think about the last time your septic system was inspected or pumped.

If you can’t remember, that’s a pretty good sign it’s time to check your records.

Regular maintenance can help catch problems before you’re dealing with a backup, unpleasant odors, or an emergency service call. (US EPA)

Don’t wait for your septic system to remind you it’s there.

Maintenance Monday Tip: 👂 Your plumbing may be trying to tell you something!

If your toilet starts gurgling when you flush, especially if you also notice slow drains, unusual odors, or water backing up, it could be an early warning sign of a septic problem.

🚨 Don’t wait for a backup to take action. Catching small warning signs early can help prevent a much bigger and more expensive problem.

Hear something unusual? It’s worth having your system checked.

Friday reminder: Your septic tank doesn’t take the weekend off. 😉

If your system has been giving you signs that something isn’t right, don’t put it off until there’s a full-blown backup.

Slow drains, gurgling toilets, sewage odors, or unusually wet areas around the drain field are all worth paying attention to.

Your septic system is out of sight, but it shouldn’t be out of mind.

Tuesday Tip: Don’t Do All Your Laundry in One Day

Got a mountain of laundry waiting for you? If you have a septic system, spreading those loads throughout the week is better than running your washing machine nonstop for hours.

Large amounts of water entering your septic system at once can overload the system and potentially stress the drainfield.

Your septic system likes consistency, not laundry marathons. 🧺

Spread those loads out!

🏠 Can You Use a Garbage Disposal With a Septic Tank?

Short answer: Yes, but it is not always recommended.

A garbage disposal can add extra solids and organic material to your septic system, which may mean your tank needs to be pumped more frequently.

If you have a septic system:

✔️ Scrape food into the trash or compost when possible
✔️ Use your disposal sparingly
✔️ Avoid putting grease, oils, coffee grounds or fibrous foods down the disposal
✔️ Keep up with regular septic pumping and inspections

Bottom line: A garbage disposal isn’t automatically a problem for your septic system, but what you put down it matters.
