Rising premiums, extreme weather, and long delays are taking a serious toll on homeowners—and their trust in insurance companies. The latest 2025 study from J.D. Power reveals just how strained the claims process has become.
Here are the key takeaways:
⏱ Repairs Are Taking Longer Than Ever
The average claim takes over 44 days from start to finish—the longest since the study began in 2008.
💡 Claims resolved in under 10 days have a satisfaction score of 762, but that drops to just 595 when repairs take over 31 days.
💸 Surprise Premium Hikes = Unhappy Customers
50% of customers saw insurer-initiated premium increases in the last year. These weren’t tied to any claims—and they caused a 101-point drop in satisfaction (730 vs. 629).
📞 Communication Is Everything
When it's easy to reach your insurer, satisfaction scores jump to 777.
When it's hard to get updates or you’re forced to leave voicemails? That drops to 337.
📉 82% of customers are stuck using non-preferred communication channels.
📱 Digital Tools Make a Difference
Customers using apps or online tools to file claims, upload photos, and track progress report much higher satisfaction—especially Gen Z and Millennials (87% are comfortable managing claims digitally).
But not all generations feel the same: 40% of Boomers aren’t comfortable going digital.
🔎 Bottom Line:
The claims process is getting longer, more expensive, and more frustrating—unless you have someone advocating for you.
