Yet another beautiful native tree, the Eastern hemlock in Michigan is threatened by the exotic pest hemlock wooly adelgid from Asia . Hemlocks are strictly quarantined here, moving them requires a series of inspections, and paperwork must accompany each tree on its journey. Careless retailers and landscapers have sold diseased stock which when planted in diverse locations has spread the environmental problem. We can only hope that this tree does not go the way of the Amercian chestnut, American elm, and all four of our native ash species. It had been a few years since I had the privilege of moving a hemlock. Luckily that changed as I moved nine of them in the last couple days.

Maybe once a year I have the privilege of moving the very gorgeous tree Nyssa sylvatica, commonly called sourgum, black gum or tupelo. This one today came from Katerberg Verhage's Cascade Tree Farm and ended up at Pro Cut Lawn Care and Landscaping.

Despite cold air temperatures lately, the soil beneath my truck is not frozen at all. In fact, if I do no stay on those mats every inch of the way I'd be stuck in the mud in a big hurry. The 4" of snow insulates the ground well, no matter how cold it gets that soggy clay soil simply will not freeze. Tall weeds in a field or a layer of leaves do the same thing. It is hard to be productive in these conditions--everything takes so much more time to accomplish.
