The water bill that arrives in the second week of September is the one nobody talks about.
The pool got used every day. Family came in for the weekend. The dishwasher ran three times. The sprinklers stayed on their summer schedule. The kids had one last swim before school started.
You expected it to be higher. You didn't expect it to be $180 higher.
Most of that is real usage. But some of it might not be.
The tricky thing about a slow leak in September is that it hides inside a bill that's already inflated by legitimate summer use. You accept the number. You pay it. You assume next month will normalize.
If it doesn't normalize by October, the leak has been running the whole time.
Compare next month's bill to October last year. Same month, previous year. If the numbers don't match and nothing has changed at home, something is escaping.
