Two sounds. Both from the same wall. One is normal. One is not.

Sound one. A brief rush of water that lasts about 10 to 15 seconds, then silence. Usually happens after someone flushes a toilet, runs a sink, or the ice maker fills. Normal.

Sound two. A low, steady hiss or trickle that has no beginning and no end. Audible from one specific location. Present at 2pm and present at 2am. Not normal.

The difference is the pattern. Normal sounds have a start, a middle, and an end. Leak sounds are continuous.

The other tell is location specificity. A normal plumbing sound might be heard from multiple spots in the house. A leak sound gets louder as you approach one particular wall.

If you press your ear to that specific wall and the sound is unmistakably louder, that's the leak.

If you own a home in any of these neighborhoods, this applies to you.

The San Fernando Valley has some of the highest concentrations of slab leaks in Los Angeles County. There are three reasons.

The homes are older on average. Most of the Valley's residential inventory was built between 1955 and 1985. That's exactly the era when copper piping in slabs was standard.

The soil is unique. Valley soil expands and contracts more dramatically than coastal soil. That thermal cycling has been putting slow stress on underground pipes for six decades.

The heat is worse. The Valley regularly runs 10 to 15 degrees hotter than the west side. That extra heat has been accelerating pipe wear the whole time.

None of this means every Valley home has a leak. It means the probability is higher than in newer or coastal areas.

Which is worth knowing before a leak announces itself.
