Summer at First Companies has officially started!

We're all so grateful for the space to enjoy some good food, time outside, and time together today as we welcome the changing of seasons.

We’re curious… as arguably the best season in Michigan begins… what are some ways you’ll be enjoying this summer?

We support each other and solve problems together. You will always know someone has your back.

We love our work. But we love the amazing people we work with even more.

We’re passionate about West Michigan and making it a more beautiful, engaging, and desirable place to live. We want to see the people and businesses in our communities thrive and flourish. That’s why we’re so grateful for our many incredible project partners, who, every day, bring their skills and expertise to our sites and make that possible.

Hosting a happy hour event to show our appreciation is truly the least we could do to communicate our gratitude for your partnership in this work.

We’re grateful for those who were able to join us at First Companies yesterday. Whatever appreciation you felt from our team, we hope you know that it only scratched the surface of the level of gratitude we have for everyone working alongside us every day to create a better West Michigan.

Our construction team recently walked the Retina Specialists of Michigan renovation site and enjoyed a tour led by Project Manager, Jason Beeke, and Site Superintendents, Bill Sloan and Nath Miller. It’s safe to say we all took something away from that visit…

It’s easy to assume a clean, organized job site without much friction means a project is simple. This one, though, is anything but. This is a complex renovation that’s just been planned and managed in a way that keeps things running smoothly.

There’s a high level of coordination happening at every stage. Regular foreman meetings dkeep trades aligned. Ongoing quality assurance check-ins help catch issues early. Systems like color coordination on plans remove possible question marks so teams can work confidently.

None of that happens by accident.

The amount of planning and legwork done upfront sets the tone for everything that follows. When the work is done ahead of time to set the team up for success, you can see it in the craftsmanship, and you can feel it walking the space.

It’s a strong reminder that our clients anticipate work that stays on schedule, on budget, and guided by a well-organized plan.

Finally, a very special thanks to Nath Miller for guiding our small group around the project. We appreciate your insight into this project and we're proud of the work this team is doing.

We’re stepping into something new, and we couldn’t be more excited...

After years of growing our property management services in the commercial space, First Companies is now expanding into multifamily property management. We’re bringing the same high level of service, consistency, and relationship-first approach that our commercial clients already trust.

With this expansion, we are adding to our team!

We’re looking for a Multifamily Service Technician who genuinely cares for people and understands the value of building strong relationships. Serving others is the heartbeat behind everything we do at First Companies, and this role will have a unique opportunity to steward relationships and meet the needs of residents and other partners.

If this sounds like you or someone you know, we’d love to meet you and have you join us.

“I can’t tell you what a relief it was to get a job paying $13/hr so I could pay rent and have a roof over my kids’ heads, pay off our utilities, get groceries, and finish the month with a little cash in my pocket, only to get home and have the landlord ask if I had a receipt that proves that I paid my rent. And I didn’t. And because I didn’t have a receipt proving I paid my rent, I got evicted… That’s real.”

We continue to be amazed and inspired by the incredible people and organizations that exist in West Michigan…

The folks at Access of West Michigan are one of those groups. We recently welcomed their team to the First Companies office for a lunch and learn session, where they provided a two-hour poverty education course. Through in-depth discussions and a simulation experience, our team was given a glimpse into the intricate realities and barriers faced by those living in poverty.

The story above is just one example of the emotional roller coaster many of us felt during the exercise. We’re so grateful to the folks at Access for giving us a clearer picture of the lived experience of so many in our communities and for providing us with ideas on how we can support those in need around us.

This experience also gave us a renewed sense of perspective as we followed that lunch and learn up with one of our quarterly Hand2Hand food packing days. Preparing those bags and boxes of food hit a little different that day.

We’re grateful for these opportunities as they influence our relationships with each other and our partners.

Today, we're celebrating the moms in our lives.

You show up every day with strength, nuturing care, patience, and the love that only a mother can provide.

Motherhood is one of the highest callings, and we’re grateful for the women who tirelessly shape our families and communities.

Happy Mother’s Day from all of us at First Companies.

“When workers arrive on site and see that hazards have already been recognized and addressed, it sends a clear signal that their lives and well-being matter.”

The above quote was taken from the toolbox talk shared on each of our project sites this morning. It speaks so clearly to the “why” behind the “what” of safety… “that their lives and well-being matter.”

What an empowering message that is. And that reality changes the way people show up every day.

People work with more confidence when they know they’re supported. They look out for each other more intentionally. They slow down when it matters. They take pride in doing things the right way, not just the fastest way.

A strong safety culture is about building an environment where people feel valued enough to be protected, prepared, and set up for success every single day.

We have Construction Safety Week because you matter.

Today’s Safety Stand Down focused on fall prevention. It’s something we all know is one of the leading causes of serious injuries and fatalities on a job site. It’s not new information. But it’s something we can’t afford to tune out or rush past.

The people we work alongside every day matter too much. You matter.

There’s always pressure to move faster, to stay on schedule, to just get things done. And most of the time, nothing happens. But sometimes it does. One shortcut, one missed step, one rushed moment can change everything.

That’s why we’re talking about this.

Use fall protection.
Slow down.
Look out for each other.

At the end of the day, no deadline or task is more important than making sure everyone goes home safe. You matter more than the job at hand.

Finally, a big thank you to Alex Gort, First Companies' Manager of Safety, for leading the conversation, and to Midwest Safety Products for being on hand today with your expertise and product demonstrations.

Construction Safety Week is here, and this year’s theme is “All In Together.”

Our industry has come a long way in emphasizing safe work environments, but there are still too many lives impacted by preventable incidents like falls, struck-by accidents, electrocutions, and more.

Look beyond the statistics. Each of these preventable incidents involves a coworker, a parent, or a friend. Creating a safe site is about making sure everyone gets home safely to their family, friends, and their lives outside of work at the end of each day.

That’s why this week matters. “All In Together” reminds us that safety isn’t one person’s responsibility. The job belongs to all of us.

Each day this week, our field teams will spend time reviewing various toolbox talks and case studies, as well as topics like fall protection and mental health. It comes down to three simple things: Recognize. Respond. Respect. Look out for hazards. Speak up when something’s not right. Have each other’s backs.
