Take A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Something Special in Saugatuck

Our construction team recently visited the beautiful Frieden Resort project in Saugatuck. Led by Josh Reynolds and Scott Steenwyck, the tour offered a firsthand look at the vision, attention to detail, and craftsmanship of this build.

At the heart of this luxury destination is a high-end amenities lodge that will feature a pool, spa, exercise facility, and outdoor fireplace designed to give visitors a relaxing, resort-style experience right along the lakeshore.

Beyond the lodge, extensive ground and utility work, along with careful tree removal, are creating space for a collection of tiny homes where guests will stay, unwind, and truly connect with the area’s natural beauty.

Seeing the progress in person and hearing the insights from Josh and Scott made the realities of this project more tangible. We’re grateful for a glimpse into the day-to-day on this site and celebrate the good work happening there.

Meet Our Summer Interns: Ethan Slock & Nathan Diephouse
Two interns. Two very different roles. One big summer at First Companies!

Ethan is jumping straight into the field, working on our Independent Bank project — a 150-year-old, four-story building in downtown Grand Rapids. From coordinating trades to managing RFIs and daily site activity, he’s helping bring new life to a historic space.

A Ferris State University student and President of the Associated Construction Students club, Ethan brings leadership, a team-first mindset, and a drive to learn as much as he can about how complex projects come together in real time.

Nathan, also a student at Ferris State, is getting a front-row seat to the project management side. He is supporting multiple active projects while helping run meetings, track updates, and keep teams aligned.

He’s especially excited to learn how great project managers think: solving problems early, keeping projects on track, and making sure nothing falls through the cracks. His curiosity and eagerness to learn are already making an impact.

As they join the First Companies team this summer, they're bringing energy, fresh perspective, and a willingness to grow. We're thrilled to have them with us for a couple of months and can't wait to see how we can grow together this summer.

Some spaces make you slow down the moment you walk in…

The new Croft Haus in Ada Village is one of them.

It’s a warm, welcoming space that draws you in and invites you to linger. Every square inch is thoughtfully designed and beautifully executed.

Our construction management team (Matt Zimmerman, Griffin Nowell, and Brandon Monreal) had the privilege of partnering with the Croft Haus team to deliver a new retail space that feels both elevated and yet approachable, while encouraging you to leave your hurry at the door.

This is what makes our team special.

On any given day, they move from large-scale industrial developments to historic downtown renovations to boutique retail spaces like this… bringing the same level of detail, care, and presence to every project.

The result is spaces that look good and just feel right.

Our construction team recently walked the Retina Specialists of Michigan renovation site and enjoyed a tour led by Project Manager, Jason Beeke, and Site Superintendents, Bill Sloan and Nath Miller. It’s safe to say we all took something away from that visit…

It’s easy to assume a clean, organized job site without much friction means a project is simple. This one, though, is anything but. This is a complex renovation that’s just been planned and managed in a way that keeps things running smoothly.

There’s a high level of coordination happening at every stage. Regular foreman meetings dkeep trades aligned. Ongoing quality assurance check-ins help catch issues early. Systems like color coordination on plans remove possible question marks so teams can work confidently.

None of that happens by accident.

The amount of planning and legwork done upfront sets the tone for everything that follows. When the work is done ahead of time to set the team up for success, you can see it in the craftsmanship, and you can feel it walking the space.

It’s a strong reminder that our clients anticipate work that stays on schedule, on budget, and guided by a well-organized plan.

Finally, a very special thanks to Nath Miller for guiding our small group around the project. We appreciate your insight into this project and we're proud of the work this team is doing.
