ππ MICE, RATS, SNAKES & OTHER CRITTERS IN YOUR STORAGE BUILDING? HEREβS HOW TO KEEP THEM OUT! π
A friend of mine suggested I put together a post about how to keep mice, rats, snakes, and other unwanted critters out of portable storage buildings. I thought that was a GREAT idea because I know heβs not the only one dealing with this!
Whether you bought your building from me or somewhere else, these tips can help protect your investment!
β
1. SEAL UP THOSE GAPS!
Mice can squeeze through openings as small as 1/4 inch! Check around your doors, corners, vents, and floor. Use metal mesh, flashing, or rodent-resistant materials to close up openings.
β
2. INSTALL A GOOD DOOR SWEEP!
One of the easiest ways for critters to get inside is underneath the door. A heavy-duty, rodent-resistant door sweep can make a BIG difference!
β
3. KEEP THE GRASS CUT!
Keep grass, weeds, brush, and leaves cleared away from your building. Snakes and rodents love places where they can hide!
β
4. WATCH WHAT YOU STORE!
Birdseed, pet food, grass seed, and animal feed can attract mice and rats. Keep these items in tightly sealed metal containers.
β
5. GET THINGS OFF THE FLOOR!
Use shelves and plastic storage totes instead of cardboard boxes. Mice love cardboard for building nests!
β
6. DONβT FORGET UNDERNEATH!
Portable buildings are often elevated off the ground. Keep the area underneath clean and free of debris. Where appropriate, use galvanized hardware cloth to block entry points without restricting ventilation.
β
7. USE TRAPS IF NECESSARY!
Enclosed snap traps can help control mice and rats. Be careful with poisons, especially if you have pets or other animals around.
π HEREβS SOMETHING IMPORTANT ABOUT SNAKES!
Snakes often come around because theyβre looking for FOOD, and mice and rats are on the menu!
CONTROL THE RODENTS, AND YOUβLL HELP REDUCE THE CHANCES OF SNAKES HANGING AROUND!
π« WHAT ABOUT MOTHBALLS, PEPPERMINT OIL & SNAKE REPELLENTS?
Donβt count on them! Mothballs arenβt intended for keeping snakes away, and many popular repellents simply arenβt reliable.
π₯ MY ADVICE?
Spend a little time protecting your building BEFORE you have a problem. A few simple preventive steps can save you a lot of headaches down the road!
And remember, these tips apply whether you own a storage shed, cabin, garage, greenhouse, or other outdoor building.
NOW IβVE GOT A QUESTION FOR YβALL! π
Whatβs something youβve used to keep mice, rats, snakes, or other critters out of your storage building that actually WORKED?
Drop your tips in the comments! You might help somebody else dealing with the same problem!
And THANK YOU to my friend for suggesting this topic! I love sharing information that helps folks, whether they bought a building from me or not!
