Ableism is discrimination, prejudice or barriers that disadvantage people with disabilities.
It can be intentional, but it can also show up in everyday attitudes, assumptions, language and environments.
Ableism might look like assuming what someone can or cannot do because of their disability, speaking to a support person instead of directly to the individual, or failing to consider accessibility when planning an event or creating a space.
Recognizing ableism is an important step toward addressing it. By listening to people with disabilities, challenging assumptions and prioritizing accessibility and inclusion, we can help build communities where everyone has opportunities to participate and belong.
