Arlington High School is Education Snapshots’ latest featured project!

Designed for 1,755 students, the new high school responds to both the opportunities and complexities of public educational design, providing a welcoming campus that supports learning, fosters community, and reinforces Arlington’s civic identity.

Organized around a central spine, with programmatic wings for STEAM, humanities, athletics, and performing arts, Arlington High School brings together the many facets of a well-rounded education. Light-filled commons, flexible classrooms, dynamic breakout spaces, and connections to nature create a vibrant learning environment enjoyed by students and community members.

Sustainability is woven throughout the design, from low-carbon concrete and energy-efficient mechanical systems to a native pollinator garden. Together, these elements support Arlington’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 while providing opportunities for students to connect with and learn from their environment.

We’re happy to share that HMFH has been named a 2026-2027 Emerging Professional Friendly Firm by AIA New England.

The designation recognizes firms that demonstrate a strong commitment to the professional development and personal growth of emerging professionals through mentorship, educational opportunities, and support on the path to licensure.

First recognized as an Emerging Professional Friendly Firm in 2019, HMFH takes pride in the collaborative culture we’ve built: one where employees from emerging professionals to seasoned architects feel comfortable sharing ideas, asking questions, and working together to develop thoughtful design solutions.

HMFH is proud to rank among Building Design+Construction’s Top K-12 School Architecture Firms for 2026!

Since our first public school projects in the 1970s, educational design has been foundational to our practice. From renovating career technical education shops to designing new early childhood centers, we see every project as an opportunity to create environments that inspire a love of learning, support a more sustainable future, and strengthen the communities they serve.

HMFH Principal and Bristol-Plymouth Regional Technical School Project Manager Bobby Williams led a tour of the new school, now open and serving students across 22 career technical education programs.

We’re proud to have designed a school that brings together bright, welcoming gathering spaces and state-of-the-art facilities for fabrication, automotive repair, cooking, graphic design, and more. These spaces support hands-on learning and critical thinking, giving students the tools and experience they need to prepare for future careers.

The first day of school always brings excitement, but for Bristol-Plymouth students, teachers, and staff, this year marked a new chapter. They moved from an outdated, overcrowded facility into 423,500 sf of light-filled, hands-on learning spaces designed to support the next generation of career technical education (CTE).

The new Bristol-Plymouth Regional Technical School features an expansive central courtyard, welcoming spaces for gathering and collaboration, and professional-quality shops and labs for 22 CTE programs, from Electrical Technology and HVAC to Graphic Design and Dental Assisting.

We can’t wait to see how this new environment encourages exploratory learning, collaboration, and innovation, not just on the first day, but for years to come.

The HMFH team recently hit the road for our annual bus tour, a long-standing tradition that brings colleagues together to learn from one another and see our school designs come to life.

This year, we visited the community-focused Middletown Middle High School in Rhode Island and Bristol-Plymouth Regional Technical School in Taunton, MA, which features state-of-the-art shops, labs, and specialized learning environments for 22 CTE programs. Along the way, HMFHers involved in each project shared their experiences through design and construction, providing firsthand perspectives on the process, challenges, and opportunities behind each school.

As summer winds down, we’re reflecting on another successful year of our high school internship program, where we welcomed three Boston-area students in partnership with the Boston Society of Architects (BSA) and the Boston Private Industry Council.

Over six weeks, our interns explored the many facets of architecture through workshops, site visits, design exercises, and hands-on projects, from sketching and physical modeling to developing valuable presentation skills. They worked alongside HMFHers across project teams and departments, gaining a firsthand look at the day-to-day experience of working in an architecture firm.

Mentorship is central to HMFH’s culture, and this program is a great reminder that it’s a two-way street. While we aim to provide our interns with new skills, confidence, and a deeper understanding of the profession, we’re continually inspired by their curiosity, creativity, and fresh perspectives.

Thank you to our interns for bringing their ideas and enthusiasm to HMFH this summer, and to the Boston Society of Architects and Pic Boston for facilitating these valuable opportunities for the next generation of designers.
