Rainy days are here.

Around Canby and the rest of the Portland metro area, that means our crews start paying even closer attention to the forecast. Asphalt work depends on conditions being right, so rain changes what can get scheduled and what has to wait a day or two.

It's a normal part of working in the Pacific Northwest. Planning around the weather is just as much a part of the job as the paving itself. 🌧️

You might notice the machines first. But watch how the crew keeps them working.

The water truck moves alongside the mill, filling it as they go. That takes coordination between the operators and gives us more time to get the work done.

On this job, we have seven hours to work and clear the road. The refill, the milling, the cleanup. It all has to fit.

That’s a little of what happens while you’re asleep.

10 p.m. to 5 a.m. That's the whole window for night milling, and there are real fines if the crew isn't off the road and cleaned up by five.

So when the mill needs water, the truck doesn't stop to fill it. It drives forward with the hose still hooked, feeding water while it moves. No pause, no wasted minutes.

It's a small adjustment that says a lot about how our crews think on a tight deadline. Every move gets planned around the clock.

The freeway doesn't give you extra room to work with.

On I-5 at night, every truck, every mill, every paver has to be in the right spot before the work can even start. Moving that big mill out of the way isn't busywork. It's what frees up space for the next piece of equipment to do its job.

Good paving starts before the asphalt ever goes down. It starts with knowing where everything needs to be and getting it there.

It's easy to look at a finished driveway or a freshly paved lot and skip past everything that happens before the first load of asphalt shows up. The planning, the prep, the people getting equipment ready before the sun's all the way up.

Eight trucks. One paver that never stops eating asphalt. A 35 minute round trip that sounds easy until you do the math.

If a truck fills every 4 minutes but the drive takes 35 minutes, you'd think we'd run out of material. Keeping the paver fed without a gap takes real-time thinking, not guesswork.

It's the kind of planning that happens before most people even notice the trucks going by, but it's what keeps a paving job moving smoothly from start to finish.

The coffee and donuts made our crew’s day. Then we read the note.

“Everyone has been so nice.”

That part means a lot. People notice the work we do on their road. They also notice how we treat them while we’re there.
