18 Years on the Job: A Survival Guide by Ray Fields

Eighteen years in utility construction is no small feat. That’s nearly two decades of dodging buried gas lines, speaking fluent Diesel, and operating heavy machinery with the kind of precision most people can’t even manage with a dinner fork.
Over the last 18 years as an Equipment Operator and Supervisor, Ray has:

- Dug enough dirt to build a small island (or at least hide a few ruined plans).

- Mastered the art of leaning on a shovel while looking deeply, profoundly productive.

- Stared into an open trench, sighed, and solved problems that weren't even in the blueprints.

- Explained "how we actually do it" to a rotating cast of brand-new inspectors.

Whether he’s operating an excavator like it’s an extension of his own arm or keeping the crew from accidentally digging a hole straight to China, Ray has been the backbone of this crew.

Here’s to 18 years of moving earth, steering the ship, and making sure everyone goes home with all ten fingers and toes. Thanks for keeping us on grid, under budget, and (mostly) out of the daily news, Ray!
