Everybody: “Aww, cute!”

Then one little bug runs across somebody’s shoe and suddenly the whole porch is tap-dancing.

The skeleton: “I have been standing here for THREE WEEKS.” 🎃

All that work. Upstaged by something the size of a raisin.

🎃 AFTER 13 YEARS IN PEST CONTROL, I FINALLY HAD A CUSTOMER ASK ME TO LEAVE.

I've been in some pretty strange situations working for BugZout, but this one caught me completely off guard.

I got a call from a homeowner who said something had been moving around inside his walls.

He'd been hearing scratching for weeks, but recently the noises had changed.

Now it sounded like someone was moving furniture.

And every night, right around 3 a.m., he could hear what sounded like people arguing.

I figured there was a reasonable explanation.

When I arrived, I started my inspection like any other service call.

I checked the exterior, looked for entry points, and eventually made my way into the crawlspace.

That's when I noticed something unusual.

There was a faint light coming from behind the insulation.

I crawled closer.

Then I heard voices.

Not scratching.

Not squeaking.

Actual voices.

I stopped moving and listened.

One voice said, "He's here."

Another said, "Everybody be quiet."

Then the light went out.

I sat there for a second, trying to figure out what I was hearing.

Finally, I pulled the insulation back.

And I couldn't believe what I was looking at.

There were six mice sitting around a tiny kitchen table.

One of them slowly stood up, looked me dead in the eyes, and said:

"Sir, we've been living here for six months. At this point, you're legally required to give us 30 days' notice." 💀🤣

Dear mice,

When we said “Come over for Halloween,” we meant the neighbors.

You weren’t invited.
You’re not wearing costumes.
And chewing a hole in the candy bag does not count as knocking. 🎃

Your garage door might be leaving a welcome mat out for mice.

Take a look at the bottom corners when it’s closed. Worn weatherstripping and visible gaps are worth fixing before an unwanted guest finds them. And if you keep pet food or birdseed in the garage, a sturdy container with a tight lid beats an open bag.

Can’t get those repairs done right now? We get it—the to-do list is already long. BugZout can help get mouse activity under control while you work toward sealing things up. Closing those entry points is still important for keeping them out long-term.

Not the most exciting thing on the fall to-do list, but better than finding something chewing through the dog food. 🐭

🏡 Shopping local doesn't have to cost more, but it sure can mean a whole lot more to our community.

There's a difference between a business that serves our area and one that actually calls it home.

I'm not knocking any business that works hard and provides good service. But when we recommend someone as "local," I think it's worth asking: Is the business actually based here? Do the owners live here? Are they employing people from our community?

As a local business owner myself, this means something to me. At BugZout, our family lives here, our business is based here, and every one of our technicians calls this area home.

And we're far from the only ones. There are so many great locally owned businesses throughout Cañon City and Fremont County that deserve our support. ❤️

Shopping local doesn't automatically mean paying more. Many local businesses offer competitive prices and great personal service. The difference is that supporting them helps support families, jobs, and businesses right here in our own backyard.

There's nothing wrong with using a company from outside the area. But when we have great businesses right here at home, let's remember to give them a chance. 👍

Because being local isn't just about where you do business. It's about where you've put down roots.

Just something to think about next time someone asks for a local recommendation. 🙂
