This was a challenging door that I did a couple of years ago.
A good customer of mine wanted to change this door from needing a key to lock it every night as some employees did not have a key.
We came up with using a panic bar on the inside & reusing the outside handle set. If we changed anything it was going to be hard to hide the oul holes. Plus this handleset really looked good!

The challenge was that the existing lock cylinder was too high to line up with the panic bar. Hmmm. After a lot of measuring on the door & the outer handleset, I drilled for a cylinder hole & moved the lock cyl up to line up with the panic bar. I this put a dummy cyl in the old dead bolt hole.
I then had to put a plate on the inside of the door to hide the old holes & drill it.
I also plugged the square holes left from the dead bolt with a proper plate.
It turned out real nice. A lot of thinking & measuring went into this project, but it paid off. Customer was very happy with the out come. So was I.

Some of you may know that I’ve been sick. I got Covid and it was pretty bad. I’ve been unable to work for the past few weeks. Even though I’m not doing any major service calls yet, I’m going to try to do small things. I am working at Home, yes I can make your keys for you there.

Covid took all my strength and stamina. Slowly getting better but it’s gonna be a while.

I only use a extremely accurate key machine made in USA. It will duplicate a key within .0005 that is one half of a thousand of an inch. Here is factory Schlage key & the duplicate key I cut.
I see keys made places where the key is off .010 that is 10 thousands! That is equal to a mile in a lock. My keys work the first time.

As a locksmith I always have to keep investing in tools and supplies. Today I got in a shipment of drill bits. These aren’t the type of bits that you buy at the hardware store. These are special carbide tip bits made for drilling safes. These are expensive, but it is what it takes to do quality safe work. Some times you have drill a hole to get a safe open. I plug the hole so the safe is just as strong as it was before.
