This call came in yesterday.

While tree removal is often handled by another contractor, restoration begins long before repairs start.

After a tree impacts a structure, there are immediate concerns:

✔ Water intrusion

✔ Exposed building materials

✔ Structural stability

✔ Additional weather exposure

✔ Secondary damage

One of the most important parts of our job is helping homeowners understand what comes next and creating a plan to protect the property while repairs are being coordinated.

The tree may be the most visible part of the loss.

Recovery is where the real work begins.

Most people never see this side of restoration.

When a home experiences a loss, belongings often need to be carefully packed out, cleaned, stored, and eventually returned.

For this project, our team didn't simply place items into boxes. They documented shelving layouts, labeled contents, and even created a hand-drawn map to help ensure everything could be returned to its proper location.

It's a small detail that most people would never know happened.

But it's also one of the ways we try to care for more than just the structure.

Because restoring a home isn't only about walls, floors, and drying equipment.

It's about helping people put their lives back together.

One of the hardest parts of this job is knowing when to tell someone what they need to hear instead of what they want to hear.

Several years ago, we met an elderly couple dealing with multiple pipe breaks, water damage, mold growing underneath the sink, aging plumbing, and the probability of asbestos.

They were overwhelmed.

After reviewing everything, I sat down with them and had a very honest conversation.

Before we could truly solve the problem, all of the plumbing needed to be replaced.

It wasn't an easy discussion.

It wasn't an inexpensive solution.

But I believed it was the right one.

Because they trusted us, we were able to work with their carrier to bring all of the additional damages under the original claim instead of forcing them into multiple claims and multiple deductibles.

What started as a water loss became an opportunity to solve the bigger problem.

The damage was repaired.

The hazards were addressed.

And in the end, we were able to redesign their kitchen to make it easier for them to navigate and enjoy for years to come.

I've learned that restoration isn't always about fixing what's broken.

Sometimes it's about helping people find the best path forward.

Several years ago, during a particularly brutal hurricane season, many of our technicians were deployed out of state helping families recover from storm damage.

Back home, our remaining crews were stretched thin.

Long days became longer.

Days off disappeared.

Everyone was exhausted.

One evening, after responding to multiple losses already that day, another call came in.

A young family.

A new baby.

Two inches of water throughout their home.

They were overwhelmed and didn't know what to do.

Something happened that night that I'll never forget.

Everyone showed up.

Water technicians.
Contents team.
Office staff.
Even the gentleman who managed the shop.

We extracted water, removed baseboards, opened toe kicks, applied antimicrobial treatment, set equipment, and even placed an air scrubber upstairs just to give Mom and Dad a little extra peace of mind for their baby.

In less than two hours, that home went from chaos to stability.

After 27 years, I've learned that restoration isn't about equipment.

It's about people.

And when it matters most, this team shows up.

RESTORATION CONFESSION #1 😂

Many years ago, we were completing a move-back after a customer's contents had been in storage for over a year.

The driveway was so steep it felt like a mountain, and after carrying furniture and boxes all day, I was running on pure determination.

I spotted a beautiful antique cabinet that needed a final wipe-down before the homeowner arrived.

I grabbed my rag, some cleaner, and got to work.

I was focused.
I was thorough.
I was committed to excellence.

Suddenly, the entire crew burst out laughing.

One of the guys yelled:

"SHAME ON YOU, VADA!"

Confused, I stepped back and finally looked at what I had been enthusiastically polishing.

Let's just say...

It was a very detailed piece of artwork. 😳

Some days are emotional.

And some days become stories your coworkers never let you forget. 😂

Anyone else have a work story that still gets brought up years later?

Several years ago, a tree came through the roof of a small home during a summer storm.

To begin repairs, we had to pack out the contents.

And pack.

And pack.

And pack some more.

As we worked, we started finding money.

In books.

In drawers.

Between keepsakes.

Inside containers.

Every time we found some, we'd drop it into a can and keep going.

By the end of the project, we'd found enough cash to cover their deductible and help with the husband's medication.

After 27 years, we've learned something:

You never know what you'll find when helping people put their lives back together.

Sometimes it's memories.

Sometimes it's friendships.

And sometimes... it's money.

One of the sweetest customers I've ever met sent handwritten thank-you cards to everyone on our team.

Then holiday cards.

A year later, I stopped by her home after some warranty work had been completed.

She knew I was coming.

When I arrived, she had cookies waiting on the counter.

What she didn't know was that I was going through one of the hardest seasons of my life.

We sat at her kitchen table.

We talked.

She prayed with me.
It was hard to keep the tears from turning into another water damage.....

Sometimes the people we're called to help end up helping us too.

Many years ago, I spent two full days cleaning Santas.

Hundreds of them.

Every pink nose.
Every white beard.
Every little Santa suit.

That collection had taken over 50 years to build, and after a fire, the homeowner was afraid she would lose them.

She didn't.

Funny the things that stick with you after all these years.

Twenty-seven years.

Thousands of calls.

Thousands of families.

Not one of them woke up expecting that day to change everything.

Thank you for allowing us into your homes.

We are honored to serve Cherokee County and the surrounding communities.
