First pic is what we pulled up to — solids crusted right over the top, baffle buried, the whole thing packed solid and backed up. This one hadn't been pumped in a loooong time.

Second pic? Same tank, same day. Once we got it pumped out, cleaned up, and set a new riser with a fresh green lid — clear water, baffle working again, and now the lid sits right at the surface so nobody's out here digging around trying to find it next time.

Wild what a difference a good pump makes. And honestly, a tank that gets this bad could've been kept happy with a quick pump every 3–5 years. Cheapest insurance there is against a nasty backup.

This is what a proper septic pump-out looks like.

Give it a watch. That tool our tech is running down in the tank isn't just for show — it's breaking up the crust and stirring the solids that settle to the bottom over the years. Skip that step, and you're only pumping off the easy liquid on top while all the sludge stays behind. Do it right, and the tank comes out actually clean.

This is the stuff that keeps a system healthy: a full, thorough pump every 3 to 5 years so those solids never get a chance to build up and push out into your drain field — which is where the really expensive problems start.

Old tank, buried lids, and a fix that'll last.

Another job wrapped up this week — and this one's a good example of why what's underground matters so much.

Take a look at these first couple shots: original concrete lids cracked and crumbling, buried under a foot of dirt, with the old plastic barrier sheeting broken down around them. When lids get in that shape, they're not sealing anything — and a tank that isn't sealed lets in groundwater, roots, and everything else it shouldn't.

So we dug it out, got the tank cleaned up and serviced, and set new risers with solid green lids that sit right at the surface. Now the homeowner can actually find their system, and the next time it needs service, nobody's out here digging blind trying to locate a buried lid.

This is the difference between patching a problem and actually fixing it. Do it right, and it's set for years.

This is where the real work happens — down in the dirt.

Here's a look at one of our crews out getting it done this week: risers installed on the tank so the lids sit right at the surface (no more digging up the yard every time it needs service), and measurements taken on the line to make sure everything's set at the correct depth and grade.

It's not glamorous work. It means shovels, red clay, and getting down in the hole to do it properly — but this is exactly the stuff that makes your septic system easy to maintain for years down the road. Do it right the first time and you save yourself a lot of headaches later.

5 warning signs your septic system is starting to fail

A septic system rarely quits all at once — it usually gives you a heads-up first. The trick is knowing what to watch for, because catching it early is the difference between a simple fix and digging up your whole yard. Here are the signs we'd want you to know:

Slow drains all over the house. One slow sink is probably just a local clog. But when everything's draining slowly — sinks, tubs, toilets — that points to the septic system, not the pipe under one drain.

Gurgling toilets and drains. That glugging sound is air getting pushed back up through the system because things aren't flowing the way they should downstream. It's easy to ignore, but it's an early warning worth paying attention to.

Soggy, bright-green grass over the drain field. A random lush green patch might look nice, but if it's over your drain field, that's usually waste surfacing and fertilizing the lawn — a sign the system's overloaded or failing.

Sewage backing up? Here's what to do in the first 60 seconds.

Nobody wants to deal with this one — but if you catch a sewage backup early and handle it right, you can save yourself a lot of mess and a much bigger repair bill. So if it's happening right now, here's where to start:

Stop using all water — immediately. No toilets, no sinks, no showers, no dishwasher, no washing machine. Every drop you send down the line just makes the backup worse.

Keep everyone away from it. Sewage isn't just gross, it's a genuine health hazard. Kids and pets especially need to steer clear until it's cleaned up properly.

Don't reach for the plunger. When it's backing up in more than one place, the clog is usually deeper in the main line — and plunging won't fix that. It just splashes contaminated water around and makes the cleanup worse.

Never put these down your drain (and what to do if you already have)

Some of the worst clogs we get called out for start with something that seemed totally harmless going down the sink. A few of the biggest offenders:

Grease and cooking oil. It pours in like a liquid, but once it cools, it hardens and coats the inside of your pipes — grabbing onto everything else that comes through until the whole line chokes up.

"Flushable" wipes. They're not, really. Unlike toilet paper, they don't break down, so they just travel until they snag on something and start building a blockage.

Coffee grounds. They seem small and harmless, but they clump together and settle instead of washing away — and they pile up fast.

New home with a septic system? A few things nobody tells you.

First off — congrats on the new place. Now, if you're coming from city sewer, a septic system is a whole different animal, and honestly, most new owners don't get handed a manual on it. So here's the short version before you learn any of this the hard way.

Do get that tank pumped every 3 to 5 years. It's the single cheapest thing you can do to avoid a very expensive, very smelly weekend down the road.

Don't treat the toilet like a trash can. Wipes, grease, paper towels — even the ones that say "flushable" — none of it breaks down the way it should. It just sits in your tank and clogs the works.

Do find out where your tank and lid actually are, and mark it. You'll thank yourself when it's time to pump, and you're not paying someone to go treasure-hunting across your yard with a metal probe.
