It’s been a hot week but that hasn’t stopped us from serving most of our customers. We started raising cutting heights a couple weeks ago in anticipation of the July heat.

Beat the Heat: Why It’s Time to Raise Your Mower Blades

With a stretch of hot, dry weather heading our way here in Northern Ohio, our cool-season lawns are about to feel the stress. If you want to keep your grass green and healthy over the next few weeks, the best thing you can do right now is raise your cutting height.

Here is why a taller lawn is a healthier lawn during a heatwave:

Deeper Roots: There is a direct link between how tall the grass is and how deep its roots grow. Taller grass = deeper roots = better access to moisture deep in the soil.

Built-in Shade: Taller grass blades shade the soil, which reduces water evaporation and keeps the root zone significantly cooler.

W**d Defense: Thicker, taller lawns block sunlight from reaching w**d seeds (like crabgrass) that love to germinate in the summer heat.

Your Heatwave Action Plan:
If you mow your own lawn: Raise your mower deck to 3.5 to 4 inches. It might feel high at first, but your lawn will thank you for it by staying greener longer.

If you use a lawn care pro: Reach out to them this week and ask if they can bump the cutting height up a notch for the upcoming heat stretch. A great pro will be more than happy to adjust for the weather!

Quick Tip: Try to avoid mowing during the absolute hottest part of the day, and never remove more than 1/3 of the grass blade at one time to avoid shocking the lawn.

We’re out in North Canton today trimming shrubs and laying fresh mulch for a condominium association that we do lawn maintenance for.

We wrapped up this landscape clean up in Jackson Township, in the Emerald Estates, this morning! We removed the leaves, sticks, and w**ds before edging and spreading fresh mulch! We also trimmed the ornamental trees and shrubs.

Now we’re heading over to North Canton to complete another mulch job!
