Howdy Earth fam 🤠 hoping the Spring season is serving everyone well! Allergies are a bit rough; otherwise, the wildflower season has been most epic and frequent rains are helping to refill the aquifers and rivers 💚🙌💦 thank the Heavens!

We (as in me, Kelly) have been taking a much-needed break from field work for the past year. While we are (I am) open to work on smaller and well-aligned projects, it feels best for mental-physical-spiritual to utilize the energy for the greatest passion of all…

That’s why I am extremely excited, happy, grateful and proud to announce that I will be assisting more regularly with Comal County Conservation Alliance work - most specifically, in the social media department

I want to thank everyone - family, friends, advocates and clients alike - for all of the continual support! It was really rewarding running a small business interdependently, and also extremely exhausting. Hats off to all owners!

It would mean the world to me if you could please take a moment and give Comal County Conservation Alliance (CCCA) a follow. Comal County is experiencing unprecedented growth, and is absolutely critical at this juncture in our space-time reality

I’m planning to be posting lots of educational info about proper land stewardship, Aquifer systems, conservation, flora, fauna, fungi… and anything else that seems and important! Please feel free to drop comments, DMs with any suggestions. We need all the help that we can get!

May all be , , and !

Post-hole setting experience paid off when installing this Purple Martin house!

“The Purple Martin (Progne subis) has been managed intentionally by humans longer than any other North American songbird. For hundreds, perhaps thousands of years, Native American tribes in what is now the southeastern United States hung clusters of hollowed-out gourds to attract this large swallow to their villages. Native Americans may have appreciated the Purple Martins’ beauty, song, or penchant for consuming annoying or depredating flying insects.

James R. Hill, III, founder of the Purple Martin Conservation Association, offers the following speculation regarding benefits of Purple Martins that Native Americans may have enjoyed:
Perhaps, Purple Martins were like alarm clocks, awakening the village inhabitants with their singing early and regularly each morning. Maybe they served as biological calendars, since every phase of their annual life cycle (from arrival in spring, pairing, nest-building, egg-laying, hatching, fledging and departure) is done on a regular and predictable schedule. They might have been like watchdogs, since they are notorious for giving alarm calls when predators or strangers approach the colony site.”

A tribute to the mighty Ashe Juniper tree, a species of Taysha (original name of , known by the indigenous tribe - meaning “friend”, or ally) - seen here, hugging an tree in happy symbiosis

We have been studying hard over the past several months, in an effort to understand this tree’s role in our local ecology

Ashe Juniper, commonly mistaken as “mountain ” by most folks, has been an integral part of our landscapes and ecosystems for thousands of years - building and stabilizing soil, providing habitat/food for countless species and doing what trees do best - sequestering carbon so that we may !

This tree has been vilified for numerous reasons, whether it be for the allergic response produced in some folks, the on-going debate about their water consumption or their growth preventing rainwater filtration into the water table. One of the most tragic misunderstandings is that this tree is an

While these points may be valid in some ways, the story towards goes much deeper. The overgrowth we now see has been more accurately linked to overgrazing and overdevelopment, where Ashe Juniper and other plants such as Mesquite, begin to grow in an effort to restore to the land

So what’s the solution? One thing is for sure: clear-cutting the land is the most ecologically-devastating choice one can make, undoing hundreds (if not hundreds of thousand) of years of work done by Mother Nature herself

Our suggestion would be, first and foremost: - we started by reading Elizabeth McGreevy’s invaluable work (www.mountaincedars.com), as well articles posted by to better understand the complexity of proper land stewardship

As far as land care and management goes, all old-growth trees, especially Ashe Juniper. These trees look absolutely stunning when pruned properly. Allow pioneering thickets to do their job at maintaining soil and geology health

While we still have much to learn, or rather to “remember” - we do our best to stay and know that flora, fauna and fungi were here before us and it is our job to listen to their 🌎💚🙏

When life gives you lemons, save the seeds and build a garden!

We built a small today, style

Started with layers of cardboard for grass-management and earthworm habitat. Next up, bunny fertilizer; compliments of Oni and Pickle bunny. Then a layer of spent mushroom blocks from and lastly, topped with soil for planting!

The center wire-mesh cylinder will hold and continuously feed this garden bed, making for extra healthy veggies!

Still needs some critter-proofing… all-in-all, this project was super fun and easy - thanks to Mom for some extra help!

We’d love to build more gardens this year, and maybe catch y’all at the local farmer’s market?

One of our current projects: before, during and after pics of a and front yard makeover!

We created a level surface for a new garden bed, that has plans to be planted with to hide the septic tanks; as well as grading out a pathway, seating pad and flat area for an eventual fire pit!

This was a super fun project and next time, we will not forget our tool bc the Hill Country is 🥲

Eternal gratitude to our Canyon Lake community!
