I’m an artist, but you won’t find me in a gallery or at a weekend “art&wine”. But drawing, draftsmanship and painting is in me and part of who I am.

Back in 2018 I was doing the October daily sketch “Inktober”. On this particular day the prompt was “roasted”. Here’s the sketch and my caption for my sketch of the LA Symphony Hall by Frank Gehry who just passed away at age 96. Thank you, Mr. Gehry

I was stumped on this one trying to combine “roasted” with architecture, then Frank Gehry popped in my head. I would love to see a concert in The Walt Disney Concert Hall. One thing about Gehry’s buildings I love is I just stare at them and wonder how he did that. Like looking at a great work of art or listening to an amazing musician, it makes me wonder “how do they do that?!” I’ve read comparisons of this building to sails, but it always makes me think of fire. It looks like a dancing fire to me, so it’s my submission for “Roasted”

Old-growth redwood. Tight grain. Deep color. Can you believe these were floor joists?? Marks from a carpenter who swung a hammer here before electricity reached this neighborhood.

We’re milling and reusing every board we can — not because it’s trendy, but because this timber is irreplaceable. It’s part of the home’s story, and honoring that story is why we do what we do.

There’s something special about giving old wood a new life.
A quiet continuity.
A bridge between hands long gone and the hands restoring it now.

More of this project soon. It’s a good one.
