Another Super Field Day in the books! 🍂 Our annual company all-hands meeting was followed by another awesome field day at Clark Farm Market. We spent the afternoon crafting floral arrangements, enjoying food from Big Pig Barbecue, and having a little friendly co****le competition. It's always a great day when we can connect, celebrate, and create together.

There’s a lot that goes into high-performance building, but one thing driving decision-making in real time is tracking embodied and operational carbon. Wondering what the difference is? Here’s a breakdown:

➡️ Embodied carbon comprises the total greenhouse gas emissions associated with the full lifecycle of materials, from raw material extraction to transportation to construction. It’s the carbon emitted before the home is even in use. Choosing reclaimed wood or low-carbon concrete, for example, can make a measurable difference in reducing embodied carbon from the start.

➡️ Operational carbon is greenhouse gas emissions produced from the energy used to operate a building over its lifespan. This includes heating, cooling, lighting, and powering everything in the home. High-efficiency systems and airtight insulation can all help reduce operational carbon.

At A+B, we’re making more informed decisions when it comes to embodied and operational carbon through material choices, efficient systems, and thoughtful design. Carbon consideration is becoming a foundational part of our high-performance building, and we’re learning alongside our partners to better understand, measure, and minimize carbon impact where we can. Ultimately, our goal is to build beautifully and responsibly, balancing performance with longevity and care for what comes next.

The before-and-after views of this rooftop project in the South End are truly transformational.

Our mission was to demolish a decaying structure atop a six-story building and replace it with a sleek, modern entertainment space — all without disturbing the neighbors and pedestrians below. Getting there involved an incredible amount of teamwork and coordination.

The completed headhouse is a stunning blend of wood, high-performance glass, and lasting craftsmanship. Exposed structural wooden beams, a plexiglass pneumatic vacuum elevator, and custom steel railings add both strength and elegance throughout. The project was a masterclass in logistics and luxury, and we’re grateful to our client for entrusting us with the complex process.

We’re thrilled to have one of our projects receive a Gold Medal for Best Single Family Detached Home (6,000–8,000 sq. ft.) at the 2025 PRISM Awards alongside our talented partners — architect and mechanical designer , interior designer , and landscape architect . This stunning, high-performance home perfectly balances grace, innovation, and purpose.

From the start, this project was built on trust and shared values between our client, design partners, and the A+B team.
Meeting rigorous certification standards demanded meticulous planning, thoughtful material choices, and a focus on longevity. We combined form and function seamlessly: cork for carbon-negative insulation, solar paneling that eliminates the use of fossil fuels, and a living roof garden that helps reduce runoff and waste.

Throughout the interiors, there’s an undeniable warmth and elegance, where every detail functions as part of a cohesive whole. This project reflects a shared vision to create a home that not only meets the highest standards of performance but also embodies timeless design and intentional living.

Delivered via crane, this structural steel beam is officially in place on the fifth floor of one of our Beacon Street projects. Thank you to Shaw Welding, our long-term partner, who helps bring our work to life. This incredibly reliable, hard-working steel fabrication shop has been in business for more than three decades, and they’ve lent us a great deal of structural and ornamental expertise over the years.

Now, we’ll add masonry work to wrap around the beam as well, allowing us to move forward with demolition and framing for new stairs in the space.

Our trusted partners are at the heart of everything we accomplish, and without Shaw, this project could reach its full potential.
