🏁 A Wonderful Cross-Club Collaboration! 🏁

The Eastern Museum of Motor Racing (EMMR) in York Springs is famous for celebrating fast cars and regional racing history—but thanks to some incredible Midnight Bloomers volunteers, it’s also home to some gorgeous new greenery! 🏎️🌱

A massive shoutout to Glenda and Mary, who wear a few different hats in our community! As Midnight Bloomers and dedicated members of the Gettysburg Region of the Antique Automobile Club of America (GRAACA), they teamed up to donate both their time and beautiful plants to transform EMMR's memorial garden into a drought-tolerant perennial paradise. ☀️💐

Perennials mean these beautiful blooms will keep racing back year after year, and choosing drought-tolerant plants keeps the museum's restored 40-acre grounds eco-friendly and low-maintenance.

🤫 Here is a special sneak peek behind the scenes! This beauty is still a work in progress and is just waiting on a fresh layer of mulch to complete the look, but we couldn't wait to show you a preview.

🛑 The "Three-Week Slump": Why your hanging basket stopped showing off (and how to fix it!) 🌸✨

We’ve all been there. You brought home a gorgeous, overflowing hanging basket from Midnight Bloomers a few weeks ago. It was a massive sphere of color, looking absolutely picture-perfect.

Fast forward about three weeks... and suddenly it’s looking a little tired. The blooms are thinning out, some lower leaves are yellowing, and you’re wondering, "What did I do wrong?!"

First of all: Deep breath. You didn't do anything wrong! ❤️

What you are experiencing is the classic "Three-Week Greenhouse Transition."

Inside our cozy greenhouse, these baskets are utterly pampered. They get daily liquid food, perfect humidity, and consistent watering. When they move to your porch, two things happen around week three:

1 The initial burst of greenhouse fertilizer begins to wear off.

2 The very oldest flowers that were open when you bought it are naturally aging out all at the same time.

We don't want you to just survive the three-week slump—we want your baskets to explode with color all summer long! Here is your quick, 3-step greenhouse tune-up to bring back those massive blooms:

1️⃣ Hit the Reset Button (Hard Deadheading)
Don’t just pluck the crunchy petals off. Follow the fading flower stem all the way down to where it joins the main green branch. Give it a firm, sideways snap or snip with your shears right at the joint! Removing those tired, old seed heads tells the plant to stop making seeds and start pumping out brand-new flowers.

2️⃣ Feed the Beast 👑
Hanging baskets are packed tight with roots, and every time you water, nutrients wash out the bottom. To get those giant greenhouse blooms back, feed your basket a liquid "Bloom Booster" fertilizer once a week. This mimics the steady diet they had with us!

3️⃣ The "Weight Test" Water Check
On breezy days, baskets can dry out in a matter of hours. Don't just look at the top soil—lift the basket from the bottom. If it feels light as a feather, the soil core has gone bone-dry and water is just running straight out the drainage holes without soaking in. Give it a slow, deep, thorough soak until it feels heavy and substantial again.

Take a peek inside your basket—see all those tiny, tight green buds tucked under the leaves? They are just waiting for their cue. Give them a quick cleanup, a good meal, and a deep drink, and your basket will be turning heads again in no time!

🌸 Let’s talk Fuchsias: The Divas of the Summer Porch 🌸

We’ve had a few neighbors asking about our fuchsias lately, and we get it—those 2” teardrop buds are hard to resist! Right now they are putting on a lovely show, but if you want to see them look truly breathtaking, just wait until later this summer.

Fuchsias are like the royalty of the shade garden; they require a little extra pampering, but the payoff is unmatched. If you want a massive, trailing explosion of blooms that lasts into autumn, here are our top three greenhouse secrets:

Hydration is Key: Fuchsias hate dry feet. Water them thoroughly whenever the top inch of soil feels dry, but make sure they drain well. In the peak of July heat, they might appreciate a daily drink!

Keep the Buffet Open: These beauties are heavy feeders. To keep those intricate, dangling blossoms coming, use a water-soluble blooming fertilizer every 10–14 days.

Beat the Afternoon Heat: They adore bright, indirect morning light, but our hot afternoon sun will scorch them. Give them a home on a covered porch or under a nice shade tree facing east or north.

With just a little routine care, they will transform into spectacular, humming-bird-magnet showpieces as the season goes on.

💛 The Royalty of the Spring Garden: Itoh Peonies 💛
They have arrived! We just couldn't resist sharing a little peak-season garden magic with you today.
