They asked us to design and fabricate wainscot for their foyer.
This entrance foyer was two stories high with two of the adjacent walls forming a huge arc along which the staircase ran.
Making wainscot with actual, recessed panels is a step up. Having it climb stairs creates diamond shaped panels and other considerations. Accomplishing this as the wall itself curves.... requires some experience and, perhaps more importantly, is wanting to make something as good looking as you possibly can. This I made almost 40 yrs ago.
My skill is perpetually trying to catch up with my imagination, it seems.

these are a few of the base cabinets for a built-in wall unit. they have no base molding here, no counter tops, not painted and the one on the bench has yet to be sanded. The doors have dowels set vertically in the top panel of each door. the cabinets will be painted a dark green and the crown molding and the wall unit's countertop will be made of walnut and clear finished. this short shop video gives you get a sense of the strong detail I created for this client.

She had so many shoes, handbags & accessories that in the small room adjacent to their bedroom I created what she now refers to as 'The Deva's Dressing Room'.

-From Concept to Cabinetry-...
We just finished creating a kitchen for them and now we are to build this pantry unit adjacent to the kitchen while maintaining the same style. Here you can see the final design rendering we came up with and now I'm calculating the elevation measurements (in pencil) to the left for my 'cut list'. The cut list is the list of all of the unit's individual parts ...with their exact dimensions.

two antique glass windows were purchased by my client from a brownstone in Brooklyn. he wanted them removed from the window frames and I built mahogany display frames for them. The 'flower' has a steel bar running behind it and affixed to the frame as the piece is so delicate as to be almost falling apart. Any attempt to redo the glasswork would cut the worth of these in half. Antiques are to be kept in their original form with all of it's aging apparent. He just paid me this morning, took them home and was thrilled with the outcome.

One of these days I'm going to video the kitchen I made for a couple who love 'Dungeons & Dragons'. That was the theme they asked for. Except that it is brand new, it looks like the kitchen in the King's castle. Though I am a cabinet maker, fully a third of my work was set design. I loved it and they've told me a number of times since how much they love it, too.

Mid Century Modern office desk / I made it for his home office in Chappaqua, NY (Clinton's neighborhood). He had it shipped to their new house in Florida shortly a year later..... as he said he won't part with it. One of my former clients (turned interior designer), Lindsay Anfang, designed it and asked us to fabricate. There was a glass surface placed on the upper counter, the front section acts as a bookshelf and it was made of Cherry.

Dad, in front of his work bench in the house I grew up in / 1950's.
I could use what I wanted except for the table saw.
I think all children are well served by learning to create and construct with their hands. They only require exposure/access to the means (tools). This skill serves all, from brick layers to eye surgeons.
I know it served me.

Our good friends had to replace the only staircase in their house but the walls were in bad shape and worse after the stairs were placed. They asked me what, if anything might be done. I showed them some wainscot I'd created for a stairwell in my place and they liked it. Everyone who sees the new stairway loves it and I feel like I've helped make our friend's home more beautiful.

the space we had to work with was both meager in size and impossibly shaped. Challenging was the word used, I believe.
The three, middle height drawers are not as deep as the two bottom drawers (for obvious reasons) but we used almost every square inch of the allotted space provided. As the only finished shot I have is dark, I've included a shot I grabbed before the built-ins had drawer pulls and were painted.
Some evening, I'll go back and shoot without the sunlight and use the house lighting to illuminate the now dark faces.
Another piece that will serve people long after I'm gone.
