FRIGID CITIZENS OF CARROLL! Here we go again! ’Tis the blowing snowing blizzarding season for us to remind you that these conditions are pretty much perfectly bad for plugging/obstructing those PVC furnace flue pipes on the side of your house! And THAT will shut down your furnace! And THAT will leave you even more frigid! Moral of the story: anytime your furnace goes out in conditions like these, the first thing to check is that the flue pipes outside are clear of frost and and ice and snow. It’s a quick check that can get your heat back on quickly and save you from having to wait for The Furnace Guy/Gal to show up. And let’s all keep an eye on our neighbors and friends who might need a little looking out for in this weather while we’re at it. Stay safe….and perhaps stay home!

We are currently in the hunt for a young person with a good attitude and willingness to learn water quality and HVAC maintenance.

This is a very trainable position for anyone who pays attention to detail and likes things tidy, and a very good opportunity to grow into a technician where the possibilities are vast.

Please email us at [email protected] or text 712-796-1119 for more details!

ATTENTION CITIZENS OF CARROLL -

MidAmerican Energy is issuing a SummerSaverSM event for Friday, July 28, from 3 to 6 p.m. MidAmerican customers in Iowa and Illinois who are participating in this program may notice their smart thermostat settings adjust or their air conditioner cycle on and off periodically during this time in order to conserve energy.

ATTENTION FRIENDS AND CITIZENS OF CARROLL! Spring is upon us (despite what the forecast says) and this business of ours is as messy as ever…. so we thought we’d make the suggestion that if you or anyone you know ever has old bath towels, beach towels, bed sheets, or blankets that are past their prime and ready for their next purpose, we can ALWAYS use them to manage the inevitable messes we encounter (and create) in the course of our work in peoples’ homes. We realize it might sound like an odd request, but the need is real in our often crappy (yes I went there!) line of work. Thanks for keeping us in mind, we always appreciate the donations we receive in this department! (Side note… we do often buy towels at the New Hope store for these purposes, but lately they have not had any availble in the store, so if you know of another charitable entity that sells such things please let us know, we would gladly support it). THANKS AND HAPPY SPRING!

CHILLY CITIZENS OF CARROLL! You might have noticed the extremely unfriendly extreme weather conditions this week... We have been hearing from may folks with furnace outages which is certainly not fun in these temperatures. If you or someone you know has a furnace out, the first thing to check is the PVC flue pipes outside - see photos. It is very common in these conditions (very cold, very windy, blowing snow) for the fresh air intake pipe to become frosted/frozen over and this will shut down your furnace. If you clear the icy obstruction from the pipe and cycle the power on the furnace, it should resume blowing warm air. Also note - this extreme cold and wind is beyond what many home heating systems are designed to deal with, so it is normal for the furnace to run non-stop and possibly even run a few degrees behind what you have your thermostat set at. Can you say "sweater weather" ??! STAY SAFE, STAY WARM, AND MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

ATTENTION BASEBALL FANS! YOU. PEOPLE. ARE. AWESOME!

A huge and heartfelt THANK YOU to all of the very fine folks who joined us last Friday night at Carroll Brewing Company! We have been reminded how fortunate we are to have such a great group of friends who are customers and customers who are friends. At the end of the night you all had donated $1898 to the Family Resource Center! Your donations are going to do a LOT of good for a LOT of folks here in Carroll! And on top of that, 55 families were adopted from the Giving Tree to receive gifts this Christmas season. That’s a WIN-WIN for sure in our book! We greatly appreciate everyone who made time in their schedule to come out and join us for beers and pre-holiday cheer, and THANK YOU AGAIN to everyone who helped us help the Family Resource Center!

Who doesn’t love a good indoor air quality meme, am I right? (Especially one we made ourselves!) Sadly folks this is not an exaggeration: if you burn candles in your home, guess where the soot goes? The stuff that you don’t inhale and that does’t settle on your furnishings goes into your ductwork and furnace filter. And the dirty (pun intended) little secret that Big Candle doesn’t want you to know: there’s no such thing as a “smokeless” candle. You may not SEE “smoke”, but there’s no magic - all of that wax that’s being burned up has to go somewhere. And it goes into the air inside the house. Which means into your lungs, and onto your floors and surfaces, and then into your furnace filter. Our advice? Maybe just skip the candles all together. The More You Know!™

CITIZENS OF CARROLL!
’Tis the season for our dire warning about unhooking your garden hoses from the outside spigots, lest you be in for an unfortunate leaking situation come next spring! Yes, they’re called “freezeless” hydrants, but if the hose is still connected, all that goes out the window and you will very possibly end up with a frozen hydrant and a potential waterfall inside the house. So please unhook your hoses and tell all of your friends and neighbors to do the same. We recommend doing this NOW before we get into some actually cold weather! Spread the word!
