Some Oldd Man's Garden Plants

Some Oldd Man's Garden Plants I produce seedlings for my home garden, and I've got too many!

I use commercial seeds planted in bedding made from my own compost bin, with no pesticides or harmful chemicals.

I thought it would be worth slipping in a panarama of my back yard garden. Since the plants haven't grown too much at this point, it's easy to see. There are 14 planting beds. I still have a little bit of cleanup of winter debris.

To help out with pollination of the garden, I am experimenting with bees. This is a bee house, from Crown Bees. It hosts Mason and Leaf Cutter bees: solitary bees that do not sting, but provide the same benifits of the honeybee. No, I won't get any honey from these bees, just more fruit and vegetables (I hope).

When the ground temperatures are warm enough, I put the plants in the ground. Yes, they are probably in a little tighter than is optimal, but I just have so many plants! Admittedly, I have 14 planting beds, with a total of 400 - 500 square feet, but I grow a lot of plants.

After the outside temperatures are warm enough, I transfer plants that are ready to plant to my outside shelf, where they can acclimate to outside conditions. Note the plastic cover on the shelving unit. This keeps most of the rain out of the trays. If it looks like the overnight temps will be anywhere close to freezing, I wrap the entire shelving unit in the plastic, providing a bit of extra protection.

My seedling production starts indoors, as early as mid-February. I generally start a complete tray of each variety of plant that I am starting (15 - 18 cells / tray). I use 5200K led light tubes (8/shelf) to provide excellent lighting. Some of the shelves have heat mats for veggies that like a little boost. With 4 trays per shelf, and 5 shelves, you can see I start a lot of plants.

I have been starting seeds inside for several years, improving my grow shelve(s) every year. This year, I finally hit the right combination of lights and planting media, and have a bumper crop of seedlings. I only have so much room for plants in my own yard, so I've decided to sell the extras.
