Do your gutters get overwhelmed?

Checking your gutters in heavy rains can prevent foundation problems as well as basement and crawl space flooding. You may be able to check this from inside if you can see your downspouts by looking out a window or door. If not, it's a good idea to occasionally walk around outside during a heavy rain as long as you can do so safely. You may notice that gutters and/ or buried downspout drain pipes are overflowing. A good gutter company can often add a downspout or increase the size of the downspout or inlet which can double the capacity of your system. If the underground pipes are overflowing then it may be time to call Drain Designs for a drainage inspection.

If you notice your drains are backing up, it may not be a crushed or broken pipe but roots that have invaded the pipe. Sometimes we find that they squeeze in at joints and quickly grow, breaking the fitting and loving all the moisture in the pipe. In a short time, they not only block the pipe but completely fill it requiring removal of the pipe or a root cutting service to come in and mechanically clean the pipe out. Occasionally, we find perforated pipe used in shallow situations or near trees. This allows grass roots or tree roots to quickly find the source of moisture and invade the pipe.

It’s hard to believe that your hard work may be causing the problems, but it’s possible. Bare soil without vegetation, a yard that slopes toward your home or paved surfaces that direct water to the structure are all potential problems. Unfortunately, not everyone thinks of these things when making amendments to the home. The key is to divert the water elsewhere, which can be done with French drains or other creative solutions like gravel and rocks.

Often, we see that people use too much topsoil or mulch in their planting beds, or they were simply graded the wrong way when they were created. They become raised and slope back toward the house, causing water to run back and against or into the home.

If the gutters overflow, too, then you have real problems. Be sure the grade of the planting beds is AWAY from the home or structure.

Collecting this run-off water and carrying it to a safe place where it won't harm your home and landscaping is essential. A smart drainage system will last the entire life of the home. It increases the value of your home while preventing costly depreciation. It will promote more even saturation which will allow the home to settle more evenly with less potential for masonry and foundation issues, etc. Smart drainage systems - such as downspout systems connected to properly designed and installed underground drainage - protect your landscaping by carrying away rainwater run-off, rather than allowing it to flow over the ground where it causes erosion and depletes topsoil. Proper drainage like this leads to a drier lawn. Less wetness means fewer bugs, harmful molds and fungi. (Termites, mosquitoes and other pests are attracted to wetness.)
