Midnight at the Falls: The 2026 Blood Moon Over Kitekite

Last night, the Total Lunar Eclipse of March 4, 2026, transformed the Waitākere Ranges into a scene of celestial mystery. While much of Auckland focused on the city skyline, one of the most scientifically striking views occurred deep in the rainforest at Kitekite Falls.

The "Blood Moon" phase reached totality shortly after midnight, with the moon sitting high in the sky at an altitude of approximately 45°. This position allowed the coppery-red light—a result of Rayleigh scattering as sunlight passes through Earth's atmosphere—to filter directly into the narrow valley. The lack of urban light pollution in the Piha area intensified the saturation of the lunar surface, making the deep crimson hues appear exceptionally vivid against the white-water cascades of the three-tiered, 40-meter falls.

This rare alignment provided a unique study in contrast, as the dark, basaltic rock of the ancient volcanic neck was illuminated solely by the eerie, refracted glow of the eclipsed moon.
