🔎 What’s happening here? Part 2: Gabion Basket Install

Not every part of a project is done from the cab. In this clip, you’re getting a close-up look at the hands-on work that goes into a gabion basket installation. After the baskets are set in place, our crew finish the rip rap filling by hand to make sure each section is packed tight, level, and ready to stand up to years of runoff and changing weather.

Once the baskets are full, Brad comes through to close and secure them, locking the entire system together so it can do its job for years, if not decades, to come.

It’s physical work, but it’s what ensures these erosion control solutions are built to last.

If you’ve got ditch banks or slopes that need reinforcement, call Terry at 563-542-6610 to talk through options for your property this spring.

What's Happening Here Part 1: Gabion Baskets

Steep ditches and fast-moving runoff can eat away at valuable farm ground in a hurry. In this project, our crew is installing gabion baskets — heavy wire frames filled with rip rap rock — to stabilize the slope and protect the field from further erosion.

Before installation begins, we assemble the baskets in the shop, then head to the site to reshape the existing grade so water can flow more safely and predictably. Once placed and filled with 6–9" rock, the baskets act as a tough barrier that slows water down, holds soil in place, and helps prevent future washouts.

Simple. Durable. Built to last.

If you’re seeing erosion or unstable ditch banks on your property, give Terry a call at 563-542-6610 to talk through solutions.

🏀 MARCH MADNESS… Gravel Grading and Excavating style.

While everyone else is crying over their busted brackets, we’re kicking off a different kind of madness this week — AI-generated caricatures of our crew on the jobsite.

There’s just one catch…
👉 Something in each photo isn’t quite right.

It might be equipment doing the wrong thing…
It might be something out of place…
It might just make you laugh once you spot it.

Kind of like those old Highlights magazine seek-and-find pages we all remember.

Each day this week we’ll post a new image.

We Move the Earth

In the year 2004, Cascade, Iowa, was a growing community with many upcoming construction and improvement projects in the farm, industry, and municipal sectors. Already home to many contractors and construction companies, the area still lacked a local business that could provide grading, excavating and dirt work, with the site prep and finishing these projects would require.

Seeing this as an opportunity to take the next step in his career, Terry Gravel decided to begin his own business. With already a decade of experience in this field, Terry knew that he had the proper combination of education, understanding, and drive to begin a family-owned, customer-oriented company. In 2004, Gravel Grading and Excavating was founded.

Over a decade later, Gravel Grading and Excavating still operates on its founding tenants of offering high-quality, customer-oriented service to farmers, contractors, and residents of Cascade, Iowa, and the surrounding communities.

With a wide array of services and specialties such as
