Healthy soil is the foundation of a thriving garden. 🐛🌱

Soil is life. It holds the building blocks of life. In our modern lives it is easy to forget just how vital soil is to us.

Whether you’re working with sandy soil, clay, or the perfect loam, understanding soil composition helps your plants grow strong and healthy.

Think of soil as the earth’s stomach. Digesting and providing nutrients to the rest of the body. For example, just like we improve our own gut health with probiotics we can do the same for our soil!

🍂🙏 On this Thanksgiving, we’re grateful for every seed sown, every bloom nurtured, and every harvest shared. Gardening reminds us of the beauty in every stage - whether it’s the planning, the planting, or the quiet moments of waiting for nature to unfold.

Thank you to everyone who’s part of this journey, sharing the joys of gardening, connecting with nature, and building community along the way. Today, we celebrate not only the harvest but the journey it takes to get there.

What are you grateful for in your garden this year? 🌿💚

Did you know that microclimates exist even in small garden spaces? 🌬🌞

A microclimate is a distinctly different climate within a larger area. For example, a south facing sunny spot protected from the wind by a north facing wall will be warmer than the rest of the garden for most of the year.

Start to observe where on your site has its own unique climate
characteristics, and how these spots behave in each season.

By observing where sun, shade, and wind interact, you can place plants exactly where they’ll thrive.

Where have you noticed a microclimate in your yard? 🌻

Grace Episcopal Church in Camden SC is my church! The special invitation to invigorate an existing, very tired, non-functional outdoor space with a new purpose was exciting, and thus the design evolved into an inspirational message: A Courtyard Designed to Honor “The Three in One”.

This Courtyard Garden concept is symbolic of God’s omnipresence and illustrated with three circles, the oval fountain terrace, the oval lawn and circular reading terrace. These illustrate the co-existence of the Three-in-One of Father, Son and the Holy Spirit within one body, the Courtyard.

The upper terrace closest to the Church features an raised oval terrace. The fountain ‘tree of life’ shares a spreading copper tree with 4’ canopy showering a spray over a small pool of black pebbles. The fountain is cradled in a bower between two ancient Japanese maples.

The oval lawn functions for children’s play as well as tented events. Beds of limelight and tuff stuff hydrangea, snow in summer jasmine and colorful native and exotic plantings provide homes for frogs, beneficial insects, birds and bees.

By interconnecting with the third “room”, a circular bluestone terrace near the Canterbury Room, a space seamlessly provides convenient outdoor seating. With its view of the soaring church belfry, inspiration abounds!

The courtyard garden honors of the late Edward Royall, a longtime community benefactor and member of Grace Church, and given in his memory by his loving family and wife of sixty-nine years, Helen Johnson Royall.

Nature’s web is all around us! 🐝🍃

When you take a moment to observe the relationships between plants, animals, and soil, you start to see the harmony that makes a garden thrive.

The bees pollinate the flowers, the flowering plants make fruit, and the forest critters enjoy the fruit. The forest critters spread the seed and the soil organisms recycle the components back into the building blocks for a new tree.

At first glance, the critter seems dependent only on the tree. In reality, they are in relationship with everything that their beloved fruit tree is in relationship with: the bugs, the flowers, and the decomposers alike.

Imagine each relationship in nature as a strand of connection in this web of life.

As gardeners we must recognize this pervasive web of life so that we can work with, rather than against, the vital forces of nature.

Honoring your local ecosystem will help prevent you from pulling the wrong strands of the web in your design process. This will help you avoid expensive, time consuming, and ecologically damaging mistakes!

Working with this awareness allows us to create gardens that have natural synergy. We can facilitate gardens that only become more fertile, fruitful, and resilient with time.

Sun and wind are nature’s tools in garden design! 🌞🌬

Knowing where the sun shines brightest and where the wind flows allows you to create cozy, energy-efficient outdoor spaces.

Sun paths vary a little bit from summer to winter. In the summer, the sun has a longer and higher path, while in the winter it is shorter and lower to the ground.

For the majority of the U.S. summer breezes come from the south or southwest, southerly. During the winter, winds usually come from the northwest, or northerly, direction. This can vary depending on where you live, so check out this wind map from the National Weather Service: hint.fm/wind

What’s your favorite sunny garden spot?
