Driving home on the interstate with my youngest son, Everette, we were returning from his first Jiu-Jitsu competition. We both took silver in our brackets; both of our wins came from submissions in dominant fashion, and both of our losses came by way of points by narrow margins.

I looked over at him and shared my thoughts. “I don’t know if I’m going to compete anymore. It’s fun and I enjoy the challenge, but there’s a lot at stake. I’m getting older, and I need to provide for you guys. What if I got hurt at a competition and couldn’t work? You, on the other hand—this is your goal. This is your ambition.”
He looked back at me and said, “Yeah Dad, you’re past your prime. You used it doing stupid stuff.”

Even though his words stung a bit, he wasn’t entirely wrong.

Although my “prime” wasn’t used to chase grand physical feats or to carve my name into the granite of history, I used it to discover who I was. I used it to shed habits, paradigms, and impressions that were put upon me from childhood to adulthood—to forge a man worth being a father.

“Everette, my prime was used to get me here—to be the man who’d drive six hours across the state to help you accomplish your goals. I’m living my dream to be the best father I can be. Now, it’s time to live your dream.”

Flat roofs in Wyoming can be a problem. Most of the time it’s fine but it really sucks when it’s not. Yes, repairs are needed but so is time/money.

I’ve talked so much smack, how can I possibly walk this back?

But really, I’ve always been curious as to how a CNC machine could help out a shop focused on a broad range of products. It seems a CNC with a large foot print might funnel the type of work a custom shop takes on.

Anybody out there have small CNC machines like those offered by , , or even ? How have they helped or hindered your scope of work?
