While it may seem random that your sprinkler head springs a leak underneath, it may be due to pressure pushing apart a poorly installed coupling. Years of the zone activating and deactivating pushed out the coupling from the poly line causing an underground leak that finally reveals itself at the surface. In this situation, I dug out the head down to the coupling that was (to my) elbow deep. I reconnected it using two clips on each side of the connector (four total). This disconnection forced mud into the line, so the subsequent head no longer sprays. The head must be removed, the zone flushed, then reconnected for proper activation.
