As garden season begins to wrap up for some Somthing to think about is a cover crop! We have tillage radishes in the picture below. We also sell winter wheat and fall rye seed. Tillage radishes can help loosen up your soil they grow like a carrot. After they die off and rot where the radish was creates a spot for water to get into your garden and helps till easier in the spring.

AMOST SUITABLE FOR FRAMING!

This picture was taken by Connie while she was working in the perennials last week. The flower the butterfly is working is an allium flower. They have a unique look and are closely related to onions.

The second picture is some of the new coneflowers that have just arrived. As a side note, the purple coneflowers in the background are just purple coneflower. I have had several people ask for this because they wanted native plants. Now we have them.

These two images show some of the great diversity of perennials that can be used in your garden. I would also like to mention diversity in plants brings with it a diversity in insects and pollinators. Adding a new and exciting dimension to the interesting aspect of your garden.

Always something new to explore!

... and you might want to consider a new tree to go with your tree wrap.

These trees are Cleveland Select Flowering Pear. They are one of the trees that bloom white in early spring.

Here is some general information about them. This is an ornamental tree which grows quickly to 30 to 40 feet tall and 15 to 20 feet wide. It is hardy to =30 degrees. It grows best in full sun, and prefers a well-drained soil, but it is adaptable to other types of soil. Once it is established it is a drought tolerant tree.

Now for the good stuff. As I stated before this tree is covered with white blossoms in early spring. The show doesn't stop there. During the summer months the leaves are a dark green, almost waxy leaf that is not affected by many pests. Late fall this tree's leaves usually turn red, purple, or orange depending on environmental conditions.

Jordan's only has 5 of these great trees available for this season.

Enjoy the last remaining days of summer and remember fall is a great time to plant trees.

Tree wraps are a great way to protect your tree investments. We have a good supply in stock this is just what we have on the shelf. In the past we have had deer damage our trees the last week of August. So you have two weeks to get ahead of them!

Many years ago, while I was working at a retirement home, I remember working with the rose beds that were scattered throughout the grounds. They were quite a bit of work. We were constantly pruning, fertilizing, weeding and watering these plants. They looked great and smelled even better. When late fall came, we would always haul in soil to mound up around the rose crowns to protect them from the harsh freezing temperatures. That was then and this is now.

Most of those roses were called hybrid tea roses and they are still the darlings of Valentine's Day. Most of the breeding work now is done on what is called landscape or hardy shrub roses. These roses are bred for easy care, fragrance, and summer long blooms.

Several different breeders are working on these easy-care roses. At Jordans we carry roses from several different breeding programs and suppliers. We have different rose varieties from the Knockout series, the Easy Elegance series and the Drift Rose series. Without going into detail about what makes these roses special let us just say that they are all pretty hardy, easy to care for, and fragrant.

Stop out sometime, take a minute to smell the roses!

HI everyone!

I bet you thought I had forgotten all about you. I thought that I would remind you of what a hardy hibiscus bloom looks like. We have 3 or 4 different varieties available. They have just started to bloom.

Let's say you wake up Saturday morning and decide today is the day to do that new perennial bed. If you don't have any experience in designing perennial beds, then it can be a challenge to make one look right. Here are a couple of pointers.

1 Put the smaller plants to the front of the bed or if you will see the bed from many different angles, put the tallest plants in the center and make each layer shorter.

2 Make sure that the soil in the bed is well drained. Perennials usually do better in a well-drained soil.

3 Most perennials have a certain bloom period. This may only be 2 or 3 weeks. In order to have your bed have color all season long these bloom periods need to be staggered. This is usually the hardest part of planting a perennial bed. If you have the time, I suggest looking at perennials at the nursery several times during the growing season to see what looks good and when it looks good. Although this takes time, I believe that it will lead to a better finished product.

It is now officially summer at the nursery. Sturgis Falls is over and the 4th of July weekend has passed. We have changed our hours.

They are as follows:
Monday through Friday 8-5 pm
Saturday 8-1 pm
Sunday Closed

Have a great summer!
Thank you for your interest in Jordan's Nursery.

I had a question asked of me the other day.

What are the white flowering trees that look so pretty is time of year? I had to ask a couple of questions in order to pick which tree she was asking about but soon settled on Japanese tree lilac. This is the first picture. These trees are the last lilac to bloom. The bloom is white or cream colored and is fragrant. They make great smaller trees, usually getting to a height of around 25 feet and 12 to 15 feet wide.

The second option is a much larger tree. This is the Catalpa tree. This tree has large heart shaped leaves and can grow to 70 feet tall. Some refer to this tree as the bean tree for its long green bean shaped seed pods.

The final picture is of something that Jordan's has in front of our building. The legendary and rare Petunia tree. This is a striking tree like collection of Giant Pink petunias. It never fails to get noticed and we have enjoyed growing it for several years.

This is a quick run-down of June flowering trees. We have all of them in stock now. That includes the Giant Pink petunias for constructing a petunia tree.

Monday is Memorial Day.

For several staff members at Jordan's Memorial Day marks the first day off in weeks.
We look at it as a day to recover and spend some time with people we care about. As I was thinking about all the things I could do with my time off, I wondered about why there was a Memorial Day.

Memorial Day is a day set aside by our government to honor and remember all of those military veterans who died protecting the freedoms and principles that we hold dear today.

While it is easy to overlook this and just enjoy the time off, one trip to Arlington National Cemetery is enough to bring into sharp focus just how many people have paid the price for these principles.

Please enjoy the day with family and friends but reserve a minute or two to remember the true cost and meaning of the day.
