This homeowner wasn't looking to remodel their entire home.
They simply couldn't shake the feeling that this stairwell felt dated.

And honestly, they were right.

The existing railing had served its purpose well for years, but it was visually heavy and didn't fit the style they wanted their home to have moving forward.

Together, we worked through design ideas and landed on a custom white oak and steel tubing that feels lighter, cleaner, and much more current.

What looks simple on paper was actually one of those projects that required a lot of careful planning and custom fabrication to make everything fit correctly.

That's often the irony of good design.
The simpler it looks, the more thought usually went into it.

No added square footage.
No major structural changes.
Just a thoughtful update that completely changes how this space feels every time they walk through it.

This room finally feels like it has a pulse.

For a long time, this room was simply a sunroom.
Now it's starting to have a personality.

The tile is down, the feature wall is complete, the ceiling details are in place, and the room is finally developing the character we've been working toward from the beginning.

One thing we love about remodels is watching a collection of individual decisions—paint colors, textures, finishes, lighting, trim details—slowly come together into something that feels cohesive.

At some point, it stops feeling like construction.
And starts feeling like a place people will actually enjoy. It becomes part of the home.

The most important part of this deck probably won’t ever be seen again.

Most water problems don’t start with dramatic leaks. They start quietly—at transitions like this.

Anywhere stone, siding, roofing, decking, or trim come together, the flashing and waterproofing details matter enormously. They’re what direct water back out instead of allowing it to work its way into the structure over time.

The tricky part is that once these areas are covered up, you’ll probably never see them again. That’s why we pay attention to them now.

A lot of what makes a project last isn’t visible in the final photos—but it’s often the most important part of the build.Pretty finishes don’t mean much if water gets behind them.

But this is one detail that matters more than most homeowners realize.

Where different materials meet—especially around decks, roofs, and stone—is where water usually finds its way in if things aren’t flashed correctly.

Done right, these details quietly protect a home for years.

Done wrong, they can create damage that stays hidden until it becomes expensive.

This deck had a beautiful finished surface — but underneath, water was slowly creating problems.

The original assembly allowed moisture to get trapped instead of properly draining away. Over time, that led to water damage, exposed insulation, and a deck system that simply wasn’t built for the long haul.

So we stripped it back with longevity in mind.

One of the first things we corrected was the slope of the deck itself. It had developed a dip in the middle, so we custom-ripped tapered shims to create a perfectly level plane and ensure proper drainage throughout the system.

We also found insulation that had been exposed to rain, snow, temperature swings, and moisture for the last three years. That all had to be replaced so the assembly could actually perform the way it was intended to.

From there, we installed tapered insulation to direct water intentionally, then fully waterproofed the deck with a PVC membrane system. At this stage, the entire area is now watertight and ready for the finish materials.

Next up:
• Glass handrail installation
• Porcelain paver system

This project is going to look completely different when it’s done, but the part we’re most proud of is what nobody will see once it’s finished.

Also — the homeowners on this project have been genuinely wonderful to work with. Kind and hospitable clients make long projects like this a real joy.

This project is getting close enough now that you can finally feel what the room is going to become.

A few weeks ago this space was still open framing. Now the windows are in, the ceiling detail is taking shape, and the room actually feels connected to the rest of the home instead of just an add-on sitting off the back.

There’s still more to finish—tile flooring, painting, stair railings, and electrical trim-out—but this is usually the stage where homeowners start to really get excited because they can finally picture themselves using the space.

Honestly, it’s one of our favorite parts of a project too.

This room gets incredible natural light, and once the finishes are complete it’s going to feel completely different than the seasonal sunroom that used to sit here.

Water doesn’t need much to cause a problem.
Just time… and nowhere to go.

This one’s a good example of why “how it’s built” matters just as much as how it looks.

Over time, this deck had issues because water didn’t have a proper way to drain. And in Iowa, with the expansion, contraction, and seasonal swings we get—that’s something you have to plan for from the beginning.

So we’re rebuilding it with a different approach.
Instead of trapping water, this system is designed to let it move—through the surface and down to a roof drain below. The finished surface will be porcelain pavers, giving it the clean look of tile without locking everything together in a way that fights against movement and moisture.

It’s one of those details most people never see, but it’s what determines whether something lasts 5 years… or decades.

Days like today are a good reminder—
the most important parts of a build usually aren’t
the ones you see...but they’re the reason we’re grateful to be out here doing the work.

This is how decks fail… and how they last.

Not every failure is dramatic.
Sometimes it’s just water—with nowhere to go.

We’re rebuilding this space so it performs the way it should in Iowa weather—
allowing movement, shedding water, and protecting what’s underneath.

Instead of trapping moisture, this system is designed to drain.
Porcelain pavers will sit above, letting water pass through and move to the roof drain below.

It’ll look clean and finished on top…
but what matters most is what’s happening underneath.

Days like today are a good reminder—
the best parts of a build usually aren’t the ones you see.

This was one of those projects where the goal wasn’t to “change” the space—it was to respect it. This home has a story to tell.

This Victorian home already had more character than most new builds ever will. Our role was to make sure anything we added felt like it belonged, like it was original.

The flooring is Southern Yellow Pine, sourced specifically to match the vintage of what would have originally been in a home like this. It adds depth and warmth, but more importantly—it ties the whole room together in a way that feels natural.

When you walk into the space now, nothing feels out of place. It just fits.

Homes like this have stories built into them. We’re grateful to play a small part in carrying that forward.

Most remodels aim to make a space feel new.

That wasn’t the goal here.

This Victorian already had character—our job was to make sure anything we added felt like it had always been part of the home.

The Southern Yellow Pine flooring was chosen to match the original era, bringing depth and continuity back into the space.

When it’s done right, nothing stands out—
everything just fits.

That’s the difference.
