The goal isn't just a new deck.
It's a deck that can actually dry out.
A deck that can handle Iowa weather.
A deck that can be enjoyed for years to come.

After removing the damaged framing, we're rebuilding this structure from the ground up with proper support, proper drainage, and a focus on durability at every step.

Most of the work we're doing right now will eventually disappear beneath the finished deck boards.
Nobody will see the framing.
Nobody will see the leveling work.
Nobody will see the countless details that make everything fit together.
But those details are what determine whether a deck lasts.

Anybody can build something that looks good on day one.
We're more interested in how it performs on day 3,650.

Because when homeowners invest in their home, they deserve more than a finished product that photographs well.
They deserve something they can trust.

This damage didn't happen overnight.
And this deck didn't need new deck boards.
It needed a new deck.

A few days ago, we shared a video of water pouring out of this deck during demolition—even though it hadn't rained in weeks.

This is why.

Years of trapped moisture had taken a toll on the framing hidden beneath the surface. What looked like a deck that needed a cosmetic update turned out to be a structure that needed much more.

The challenge with problems like this is that they're often invisible until the deck boards come off.

From above, everything can appear fine.
Underneath is a different story.

One of the reasons we open things up and investigate before making recommendations is because we'd rather uncover the real problem than simply cover it up with something new.

The goal isn't just to make a project look better.
It's to make sure it's actually better.

Now that we understand what caused the damage, we can start building it back the right way.

Doing it right doesn't always look perfect.
Sometimes it looks like a shattered glass panel.

One of the less glamorous parts of construction is that sometimes things go wrong.

This deck has been a labor of love. We rebuilt the assembly from the waterproofing up so water can drain properly and the structure can perform the way it should for years to come.

This project started because someone needed help fixing what wasn't working. The last thing we're going to do is cut corners now that we're responsible for the outcome.

This week we started installing the glass railing panels.
One panel needed some adjustment to bring it perfectly into plumb. During that process, the glass shattered.
Nobody wants to hear that sound.
It's expensive, frustrating, and can be dangerous if you're not careful.

But moments like this are also a reminder that doing things the right way isn't the same as doing things perfectly the first time.
Doing things the right way means being willing to stop, reassess, learn from the mistake, and make it right.

We could simply share the finished photos once the replacement arrives and pretend this part never happened. Instead, we think it's important to show the reality of the work.

Construction is problem-solving. It's accountability. It's making the next decision correctly, even when the previous one didn't go as planned.

Beautiful tile and paint colors get the attention.

The big transformations are behind us, which means we're now in the phase of the project where the changes get smaller—but no less important.

While this room is definitely starting to show its personality, what goes underneath those finishes is just as important.

Before a single tile was laid in this sunroom, we spent considerable time making sure the substrate was properly prepared, flat, and ready for a long-lasting installation.

Most homeowners will never see those steps once the project is complete.
But they're often the difference between a floor that performs well for years and one that develops problems prematurely.
The finished product matters.

But so does everything underneath it and everything that led up to it.
That's why we put just as much care into the parts that get covered up as the parts everyone sees.

We're getting close to the finish line, and that's exactly why the details matter more than ever. This won't just be a room we built—it will be part of someone's home.

Before the finished tile, paint colors, and trim details come the steps that most people never notice: floor preparation, layout, adjustments, and all the little decisions that help everything come together correctly.

We’re Dane & Natalie — the husband-and-wife team behind Crafted.

A big reason we started this business was because we wanted to build more than just homes.

We wanted to build a life centered around hard work, integrity, craftsmanship, and family.

Remodeling homes may seem like construction on the surface, but for us it has always felt more personal than that. Home is where families grow, gather, rest, celebrate, and make memories together.

As a husband-and-wife team, we’ve always believed the work should be done the right way — even when it takes more time, more effort, or nobody would notice otherwise.

These little ones are a huge part of why.

We want them to grow up seeing what it looks like to care deeply about your work, treat people honestly, and build things meant to last.

This homeowner wasn't looking to remodel their entire home.
They simply couldn't shake the feeling that this stairwell felt dated.

And honestly, they were right.

The existing railing had served its purpose well for years, but it was visually heavy and didn't fit the style they wanted their home to have moving forward.

Together, we worked through design ideas and landed on a custom white oak and steel tubing that feels lighter, cleaner, and much more current.

What looks simple on paper was actually one of those projects that required a lot of careful planning and custom fabrication to make everything fit correctly.

That's often the irony of good design.
The simpler it looks, the more thought usually went into it.

No added square footage.
No major structural changes.
Just a thoughtful update that completely changes how this space feels every time they walk through it.

This room finally feels like it has a pulse.

For a long time, this room was simply a sunroom.
Now it's starting to have a personality.

The tile is down, the feature wall is complete, the ceiling details are in place, and the room is finally developing the character we've been working toward from the beginning.

One thing we love about remodels is watching a collection of individual decisions—paint colors, textures, finishes, lighting, trim details—slowly come together into something that feels cohesive.

At some point, it stops feeling like construction.
And starts feeling like a place people will actually enjoy. It becomes part of the home.

The most important part of this deck probably won’t ever be seen again.

Most water problems don’t start with dramatic leaks. They start quietly—at transitions like this.

Anywhere stone, siding, roofing, decking, or trim come together, the flashing and waterproofing details matter enormously. They’re what direct water back out instead of allowing it to work its way into the structure over time.

The tricky part is that once these areas are covered up, you’ll probably never see them again. That’s why we pay attention to them now.

A lot of what makes a project last isn’t visible in the final photos—but it’s often the most important part of the build.Pretty finishes don’t mean much if water gets behind them.

But this is one detail that matters more than most homeowners realize.

Where different materials meet—especially around decks, roofs, and stone—is where water usually finds its way in if things aren’t flashed correctly.

Done right, these details quietly protect a home for years.

Done wrong, they can create damage that stays hidden until it becomes expensive.

This deck had a beautiful finished surface — but underneath, water was slowly creating problems.

The original assembly allowed moisture to get trapped instead of properly draining away. Over time, that led to water damage, exposed insulation, and a deck system that simply wasn’t built for the long haul.

So we stripped it back with longevity in mind.

One of the first things we corrected was the slope of the deck itself. It had developed a dip in the middle, so we custom-ripped tapered shims to create a perfectly level plane and ensure proper drainage throughout the system.

We also found insulation that had been exposed to rain, snow, temperature swings, and moisture for the last three years. That all had to be replaced so the assembly could actually perform the way it was intended to.

From there, we installed tapered insulation to direct water intentionally, then fully waterproofed the deck with a PVC membrane system. At this stage, the entire area is now watertight and ready for the finish materials.

Next up:
• Glass handrail installation
• Porcelain paver system

This project is going to look completely different when it’s done, but the part we’re most proud of is what nobody will see once it’s finished.

Also — the homeowners on this project have been genuinely wonderful to work with. Kind and hospitable clients make long projects like this a real joy.
