There’s nothing quite like building with real Iowa limestone.
This is Grant Wood stone from Stone City, Iowa, installed in a natural riprap style. I love working with this material because it doesn’t force you into the rigid, manufactured look of conventional retaining-wall block. Every stone has its own shape, texture and character, allowing the wall to flow naturally with the landscape.
The result is part retaining wall, part natural limestone outcropping—rugged, timeless and uniquely Iowa.

Finishing up this limestone boulder wall in North Liberty today!
This area previously had one of those ultra-tacky manufactured concrete block retaining walls—and it was already falling apart after not even 10 years.
We replaced it with real limestone, creating a natural, free-flowing wall that actually looks like it belongs in the landscape. The irregular stone, curves, and natural texture give it character you just can't manufacture.
Everything is better with stone.
