Small Spaces, Timeless Character!
One of Our First Cedar Rapids Installations upon moving here from Minnesota — A Bistro Patio Featuring Historic Purington Pavers
Not long after bringing Antiquescapes to Cedar Rapids, we created this intimate garden patio using reclaimed, end-stamped Purington Paving Brick.
The patio was constructed at an elevation above the adjoining alley, with irregular natural limestone forming a gently curving retaining edge. This combination of historic brick and weathered stone creates the atmosphere of an old-world garden courtyard.
The rich reds, purples, and charcoal tones of the Purington brick complement the natural limestone, antique stone furnishings, and surrounding flowers.

Looking Ahead to 2027 — A Personal Update from Antiquescapes
After years of building with stone, I've been spending a little time rebuilding my own strength!
Some of you may have noticed that Antiquescapes has taken things a little slower this construction season.
I've been dealing with some back issues and have been working with a physical therapist to regain strength and improve my physical conditioning.
I've been involved in landscaping and this kind of hands-on work since I was just 12 years old. What began as a childhood interest eventually developed into a lifelong passion for historic materials, creative design, and old-world craftsmanship.
Anyone who's worked in stone masonry or landscape construction knows just how demanding it can be on the body. Now at 44 years old between handling heavy stone, excavation, demolition, and countless hours spent bending and lifting, the years can certainly take their toll.
Sometimes you've got to recognize when it's time to slow down a little and take care of yourself.
One thing that hasn't changed is my enthusiasm for the creative side of Antiquescapes. In fact, designing projects, researching historic materials, and finding imaginative ways to bring old-world character into modern landscapes are among the things I enjoy most about this business.
With winter approaching, I'm looking forward to having more time to focus on that creative process.
The winter months provide an excellent opportunity to explore ideas, develop designs, source materials, and plan projects for the upcoming construction season.
And please don't hesitate to reach out just because you're not quite ready to move forward with a project!
I genuinely enjoy discussing ideas and exploring possibilities with people. Some of the best projects begin with conversations months, or even years, before construction takes place.
Not every conversation needs to turn into an immediate job. Sometimes it's simply about exchanging ideas, developing a vision, and figuring out what might work best for a particular property.
While extensive design and planning services may require a separate arrangement, I'm always happy to have an initial conversation.
I'm looking forward to continuing my recovery, rebuilding my endurance, and hopefully returning to a more active construction season in 2027.
After doing this kind of work for most of my life, I still find tremendous satisfaction in taking a pile of old stone or brick and turning it into something beautiful that can be appreciated for generations.
I'd like to thank everyone who has supported Antiquescapes over the years. Your appreciation for our craftsmanship means a great deal to me!

The Mount Vernon Classical Entrance An Early Antiquescapes Signature Project
One of our very first signature projects following our relocation from Minnesota to Eastern Iowa was this limestone stairway and brick sidewalk in historic Mount Vernon.
Symmetry was at the heart of this design.
Our customer had a particular appreciation for symmetry, so we made it a priority throughout the project.
The sidewalk was carefully laid out so that its centerline aligned precisely with the centerpoint of the home's front door, establishing a strong architectural axis from the street to the entrance.
We carried that attention to detail even further by aligning the limestone sidewalk curbing with the top course of the stairway sidewalls, allowing the curbing to visually disappear into the stonework rather than creating an awkward transition.
The walkway features historic raised-stamp Purington Pavers supplied by Gavin Historical Bricks of Iowa City, complemented by natural limestone steps and walls.
The classical urns complete the composition, reinforcing the formal symmetry of the entrance.
Our goal was to create something that looked as though it had always belonged to the property.

Waterfall-Inspired Limestone Steps by Antiquescapes!
The goal with this project was to create a natural-looking stone staircase that appeared to have formed right out of the hillside, much like a cascading waterfall.
Rather than building a conventional staircase with uniform edges, we carefully positioned natural limestone boulders to establish the free-flowing shape of each step. The idea was to make the stonework look as though nature had arranged it!
The limestone risers were actually reclaimed from an old retaining wall on the property. Their varying lengths worked to our advantage, helping create the irregular, cascading appearance we wanted.
We then made individual templates for the flagstone treads, using a grinder to score irregular cuts and a chipping hammer to shape the edges so the stones would fit naturally around the surrounding boulders.
There was more to the design than just the staircase!
We also wanted to draw the eye uphill toward the attractive shed structure while directing attention away from the central air conditioning unit. The placement of the steps and boulders helped us accomplish both.
Why do we like working with reclaimed stone and brick?
Besides the character and history these materials bring to a project, they can also offer considerable savings!
Natural stone and brick can become expensive, especially on larger projects. By being resourceful with materials, we can keep more of the customer's investment focused on design and craftsmanship rather than having to scale back a great idea because material costs have pushed the project over budget.
In this case, reusing the existing limestone not only saved money but actually contributed to the appearance we were trying to achieve!
Sometimes the materials that save us money are also the ones that give a project its greatest character.

Spending some time back in Minneapolis this spring gave me a whole new appreciation for Iowa.
I grew up in the Twin Cities, so Minneapolis will always be a part of me. But after several years of living and working in Eastern Iowa, I’ve come to really appreciate what makes this area special.
The open space. The mature trees. The wildlife. The rolling countryside. The older homes and small communities. There’s a sense of room here that’s getting harder and harder to find in a major metropolitan area.
Coming back to Minneapolis after spending so much time in Iowa, I was struck by just how much of the landscape has been built over. Here in Iowa, you can still find properties where the natural surroundings are a major part of the character of the place.
And that’s something I really enjoy about the work we do at Antiquescapes.
Natural stone, reclaimed brick, old-world walls, paths and landscapes can complement that character rather than trying to replace it. There’s something satisfying about building with materials that look like they’ve always belonged there.
This spring reminded me that Iowa isn’t just where I happen to be doing business.
I’ve really grown to love this place.
