🍁 EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT: RENÉE

Meet Renee, one of the operators at Maple Ridge Civil.

RenĂ©e has spent nearly 30 years in the construction field, including 20 years operating equipment. She brings a lot of experience and a strong work ethic with her to MRC. She’s resilient, dependable, and no stranger to hard work — something that carries over well beyond the jobsite.

At home, life stays just as busy. RenĂ©e is a mom and has a hobby farm filled with horses, goats, pigs, ducks, chickens, turkeys, rabbits, dogs, and cats. When she gets some free time, you’ll usually find her outdoors hunting, fishing, ice fishing, or working in the garden.

She’s a Bills fan, listens to Metallica, and hopes to make it to Alaska someday.

Between nearly three decades in the industry and everything she keeps up with outside of work, Renée is someone who knows a thing or two about staying busy and getting the job done.

We’re happy to have her as part of the MRC crew!

What We’re Doing Wednesday đŸ‘·â€â™‚ïž

This week, our crew is making major progress in Cicero, setting the prestressed concrete span units for the Lakeshore Road Bridge.

The project includes replacement of the existing concrete bridge deck with a new prestressed concrete slab, along with substructure concrete repairs, waterproofing, new bridge rail, highway approach work, asphalt pavement, and striping.

Setting the span units is a major milestone and one of those operations that’s pretty impressive to watch come together.

Another big step forward for the Lakeshore Road Bridge project.

Thanks to Tracey Road for the hitachi rental and Jefferson Concrete Corp. for supplying the prestressed span units.

MRC Story-A Major Challenge We Overcame

Sometimes, the biggest challenges come right when you’ve decided to make your biggest change.

When COVID hit, Maple Ridge Civil had just made a pivotal shift. We were moving away from being a service-based company and focusing our future on commercial landscape installation.

Then, almost overnight, everything changed.

We temporarily shut our doors and worked behind the scenes—bidding projects, building relationships, and figuring out how to keep moving forward during an incredibly uncertain time. An EIDL loan gave us the opportunity to keep the business going while we worked toward what came next.

At the same time, our new direction required equipment and resources we didn’t yet have. Building that fleet took time, and every new project meant carefully balancing people, equipment, schedules, and the demands that come with working as a subcontractor.

In a lot of ways, COVID was both a challenge and a turning point for MRC. It forced us to keep adapting, keep building relationships, and keep finding a way forward.

That balancing act hasn’t disappeared as we’ve grown. The projects are bigger, the team is bigger, and there are more moving pieces—but learning how to navigate those challenges has been part of building MRC into the company it is today.

From commercial landscape installation in 2019 to the civil construction projects we’re taking on today, a lot has changed—but navigating the challenges that come with growth has remained part of the MRC story.

đŸ‘·EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT: GABE

Meet Gabriel, one of our Foremen here at Maple Ridge Civil!

For Gabe, family is at the center of everything. He and his wife, Kelsea, have three boys — Lincoln, Sonny, and Rohan — and much of his time outside of work is spent keeping up with them and their sports. Whether it’s football, baseball, basketball, or wrestling, there’s usually a game, practice, or event on the calendar.

That love of sports carries over into Gabe’s own interests, too. He’s a Giants fan, loves football season, and even has coaching football on his list of things he enjoys outside of work.

More than anything, Gabe says his kids and family are both what motivate him and what he’s most proud of — which tells you quite a bit about the person behind the hard hat.

We’re happy to have Gabe on the MRC team and appreciate everything he brings to the field as a Foreman!

What We’re Doing Wednesday 🚧

Just a few weeks ago, we shared the kickoff of our Lake Moraine Causeway project in Madison County. Today, we’re taking you back for a look at the finished product!

Our team completed the installation of a new precast box culvert, along with the surrounding site and roadway work.

It’s always rewarding to see a project come together from start to finish — especially from this view. 👏

The MRC Story | The First Major Project

Every company has projects that help shape its future. For Maple Ridge Civil, Dutch Village in Menands, NY was one of them.

MRC bid Dutch Village in 2017, and it became our first awarded commercial bid project. The project ultimately spanned two seasons, bringing challenges, valuable lessons, and experiences that would help determine the direction of the company.

The scope included planting trees, shrubs and perennials, landscaping a water retention pond, bark and stone mulch, hydroseeding for lawn and erosion-control areas, and rolled erosion control.

At the time, the MRC crew was small—Austin, Berni, Braydon, Nathan and Dan. Taking on a commercial project of this size meant learning how to navigate a larger scope of work, design changes, significant schedule delays, and the challenges of having only small sections of the project ready at a time.

The project also pushed MRC to grow. During the first season, the team rented a hydroseeder from Watson Farm to complete portions of the work. By the second season, MRC had invested in its own FINN T120 HydroSeeder.

By the time Dutch Village was complete, there was plenty of relief—but even more pride.

More importantly, the experience gave Austin and Berni the confidence to continue bidding commercial landscape construction work. Along with several new projects that followed, Dutch Village helped solidify a major decision for MRC: it was time to move away from landscape maintenance and pursue landscape construction.

Looking back, Dutch Village was more than our first major commercial project. It was one of the projects that helped set the direction for everything that came next.

We're grateful for the companies and individuals who played a role in this early chapter of The MRC Story, including Albany Management , Laberge Group and the late Ron Laberge, Watson Farms, HydroGrass Corp./Russ Collier, FINN Corporation , SeedWay, LLC , We Find Plants / Horticultural Associates , and JC Smith Inc

As Maple Ridge continued to grow, it became clear that it was time to grow the team, too.

With more residential and commercial lawn accounts to manage, Maple Ridge made its first hire: Braydon Hudson. Braydon had previously worked on a mowing crew for another local company, bringing experience that made him a great fit for what the business needed at the time.

Back then, things were a lot simpler—but there was still plenty to juggle. Berni split her time between working in the field and handling responsibilities in the office, while Austin was heavily involved in the day-to-day maintenance work.

Hiring that first employee started to change things.

With Braydon helping handle the work in the field, Austin was able to begin stepping away from some of the maintenance work and spend more time thinking about the bigger picture—where Maple Ridge could go and how the business could continue to grow.

Looking back, bringing Braydon on as Maple Ridge's first employee was about much more than adding another person to the crew. It was one of the first steps toward building a team and creating the Maple Ridge Civil we know today.

One employee became a team, and that team helped build MRC from the ground up.

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT 🚛

Meet Roger, Truck Foreman at Maple Ridge Civil!

Now in his second year with MRC, Roger helps keep our projects moving and our crews supported in the field. He’s pictured here with one of the newest additions to the MRC fleet — Jasmine, as Roger has officially named her!

Outside of work, Roger enjoys camping, bowling, traveling, and spending time with his family. A proud husband, father, and grandpa of eight, Roger says his family is what he’s most proud of.

His motivation is simple: “Be better today than yesterday.”

We’re glad to have Roger as part of the Maple Ridge Civil team and appreciate everything he does to keep us moving!

What We're Doing Wednesday

This week, we're excited to share the newest addition to the Maple Ridge Civil fleet—a brand-new CAT 326 excavator equipped with Trimble 3D GPS.

Investing in the right equipment helps our team work safely, efficiently, and deliver the quality our clients expect. This machine is already on-site and ready to get to work.

We're looking forward to putting it to work on projects across Central New York and continuing to build the infrastructure our communities rely on.

We’d also like to extend a special thank you to SITECH Northeast for the GPS system, Milton CAT for supplying our new Caterpillar326, and Ryan Aldrich Trucking for delivering it to the jobsite.
