West Park Kamm's Neighborhood Development - it was a pleasure to work with you all!

Today on the blog we’re highlighting an extensive cleanup of the planter beds in downtown Kamm’s Corners that happened last month thanks to a generous donor and the team at Native Landscapes and Gardens

Learn about the work they did and all the new plants you’ll see in bloom next spring by visiting the link in our bio under WPKND Blog.

Our thanks go out to the donor, who prefers to remain anonymous, that made this project possible. We appreciate all your efforts to keep Kamm’s Corners looking its best!

Fall is the Best Time to Plant Trees + Shrubs

Fall is one of the best times to plant native trees and shrubs. The soil is warm, rain is typically more steady, roots get a head start and grow until the ground freezes, and there is less water stress compared to summer heat. Consider redbud, serviceberry, or viburnum trees for structure and purple coneflower and goldenrod among others for perennial planting.

Rethinking the Fall Clean-Up

In native gardens, fall isn’t the end—it’s a beginning. That’s why we take a different approach to fall clean-ups at Native Landscapes and Gardens.

Nearly 70% of native bees nest underground and rely on fallen leaves and hollow stems to survive the winter. Our team knows which stems to cut and which to leave. Which seedheads feed birds. Which leaves shelter butterflies. Because when you care for a garden with life in mind, you create beauty that lasts beyond the season.

Need help getting your garden ready for winter—the right way? We’re here for that.

90% Less Water. Zero Chemicals. Same Curb Appeal.

Did you know native plants require no synthetic fertilizers and up to 90% less water than non-native ornamental plants, making them critical in climate adaptation and water conservation.

What’s Happening Underground Is Just As Powerful As What’s Above

Native plants and grasses grow deep, complex root systems that hold soil in place, soak up stormwater, and reduce runoff—they act like living sponges, absorbing and slowing down rainfall. These roots help prevent erosion and flooding—making beauty functional, increasing the soil’s water-holding capacity by up to 50%. Source: Sustainable Sites Initiative

Meet the Leafcutter Bee 🐝

Not all bees live in hives. Here's the Leafcutter bee 🐝—a solitary pollinator that snips tiny circles out of leaves to build its nest. Native to Ohio and incredibly gentle—they rarely sting, even when handled. Leafcutter Bees prefer native plants with soft leaves like Redbud—so skip the boxwood and support bees like this one. Native gardens don’t just look good—they’re essential habitat.

Native vs. Non-Native: Which Supports More Life?

Not all plants are created equal.

Boxwood may be tidy—but Inkberry is tidy AND supports local birds and pollinators.
Japanese Maple has drama—but native Redbud has drama AND its blooms feed early pollinators.
Mophead Hydrangea is sterile and does little to support the life in your yard. Lacecap Hydrangea? Beautiful and beneficial, year-after-year.

Choose plants with purpose.

What One Tiny Bird Family Really Needs

One pair of Chickadees needs between 6,000–9,000 caterpillars to raise one brood of chicks. These numbers are only possible in landscapes rich in native vegetation. Source: Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center

It's good to go Native.

Native Landscapes and Gardens serves the Cleveland, Ohio, area with premier landscaping services that are eco-friendly, low-maintenance, and beautiful.

What to Cut Back, What to Leave

Not everything needs a clean cut. At Native, we cut back with purpose—balancing structure and habitat. Dried flower heads? Leave them. They offer seeds for birds and sculptural winter beauty. Stems from perennials like bee balm? Great for nesting bees come spring. Here's a peek at how we make the call between tidy and thoughtful.

Hydrangea arborescens: LEAVE (Leave the dried flower heads and stems of Hydrangea arborescens through winter—they add elegant structure, trap snow beautifully, and provide shelter for overwintering insects.)

Bee Balm: LEAVE (Hollow stems provide overwintering habitat for native bees. Cut back in early spring instead.)

Purple Coneflower: LEAVE (Seed heads feed finches and other birds all winter long—and look beautiful with frost.)

Goldenrod: LEAVE (Dried seed heads provide food for birds, and stems support overwintering insects like beetles.)

Wild Bergamot: PRUNE (Can be cut back lightly to shape, but leave some stems for pollinators and structure.)

Blue False Indigo: PRUNE (The woody stalks can become brittle and floppy by late fall and unlike hollow-stemmed natives, Blue False Indigo does not provide significant overwintering habitat, so pruning doesn’t impact insect shelter.)

If you have questions or need some help—give us a call.
