Most CP retrofit projects happen on tanks that are already in service, which raises a different set of questions:
How do you install a system under a tank that's already there, and how do you verify it's actually working once it is?
This technical article on retrofit CP covers both.
➡️ On the installation side, linear anodes placed beneath the tank using horizontal directional drilling (HDD) avoid the need to take a tank out of service or disturb the foundation.
➡️ On the verification side, fixed reference electrodes give you a way to confirm CP performance is consistent across the entire tank bottom, not just at a few spot checks.
If you're managing an aging AST fleet and cathodic protection wasn't part of the original build, this is a good place to start.
