Last Friday was a day of training and group fun. The crew participated in their Aerial Rescue training and afterwards we enjoyed a nice team building picnic. We had a few friendly competitions including a tree species identification walk, identifying a tree diameter and determining the height of a tree. Congratulations to our winners: Josh for tree species, Ryan for tree diameter and Jeremy for tree height.

Mature larvae of the redheaded pine sawfly.

Feeding occurs in spring and summer, with the majority of sawfly species feeding for two to four months before pupating. The eggs hatch in the spring and the larvae feed on leaves or needles of the host plant. Once they have finished feeding, these larvae head to the ground, where they pupate. Some even construct a silk parachute to reach the ground. Some sawflies will skeletonise leaves rather than totally consuming them, whilst others will feed on fruit, e.g., mining tunnels in apples.

All lined up in downtown Greencastle. After a tree inventory and a risk assessment it was determined that these very old Sycamore trees were in need of some TLC. Unfortunately one was so bad that a removal was necessary.

Cherrypine??? I've seen a lot of strange things. But, this is a first. Colby and I ran into this yesterday. We thought it was wrapped behind the Black Cherry. After looking closer it's a 16 inch Black Cherry with a 4" White pine branch perfectly growing off the trunk. Customer said they thought it happened naturally but I think someone grafted it. The branch attachment was too perfect.
