When mortar joints begin to fail on a stone or brick structure, the wall loses its primary defense against moisture infiltration. Water that enters through deteriorated joints works its way into the wall system, and in colder climates, the freeze-thaw cycle accelerates the damage and compromises the structural integrity of the entire wall. Stone repointing removes that failed mortar and replaces it with new joints that restore both water resistance and structural cohesion.
