How to Protect Your Pipes During East Texas Cold Snaps
This article walks homeowners through how short-term freezes can impact plumbing systems in East Texas. It covers which pipes are most vulnerable, practical winterization steps, and simple precautions that help reduce the risk of frozen or burst pipes during unexpected cold weather events in the East Texas area.
If you’ve ever been surprised by freezing weather in East Texas, your plumbing could be at risk. Exposed pipes, outdoor faucets, and uninsulated lines can freeze quickly during short cold snaps. Insulating pipes, shutting off exterior water sources, and letting faucets drip during extreme cold helps prevent burst pipes and sudden water damage inside your home.
1. Insulate Pipes: Use foam pipe insulation or wrap pipes with towels or heating tape, especially those that are exposed to cold air.
2. Seal Cracks and Openings: Seal any cracks and openings in your home's exterior walls where cold air might enter, especially around windows, doors, and where pipes enter the home.
3. Keep Cabinet Doors Open: Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to circulate around the plumbing, particularly in bathrooms and kitchens.
4. Drip Faucets: Let faucets drip slightly to keep water moving and prevent freezing. This is especially important for faucets located on exterior walls.
5. Keep the Thermostat Steady: Maintain a consistent indoor temperature, ideally no lower than 55°F, even if you're going away.
6. Let the Water Run: If a freeze is expected, let cold water run through faucets to help prevent freezing.
7. Disconnect Hoses: Remove and store garden hoses and shut off outside faucets to prevent freezing.
8. Prepare for Power Outages: Have a backup plan for heat sources in case of power outages, as this can lead to rapid cooling of your home.
Know Your Home's Plumbing: Be aware of where your pipes are located and which ones are most vulnerable to freezing, so you can monitor them closely during cold weather.
Consider Heat Tape: For particularly vulnerable pipes, consider installing electrical heat tape that can be plugged in to keep them warm.
