Confession from a flower farmer…

Most people think a lot of the flowers we harvest don’t actually look ready yet!

Lilies are cut in the bud stage so they can open in the vase. If we wait until they’re fully blooming in the field, we’ve waited too long. These lovelies will condition in the cooler and will slowly open as we use them in bouquets. 💐

The goal isn’t for me to enjoy the flowers at their peak in our field, it’s for YOU to enjoy them at their peak in your vase. 🌸

🌸 Calling All Peony People!! 🌸

We’re considering ordering some additional peony roots this year for sale to our customers! Shipped directly from the Netherlands to Yale Road Flowers, and then straight to you! We’ve officially been approved as a wholesaler for one of the most renowned Dutch peony cultivator! 🎉

Unlike many roots sold through big box stores, these won’t spend months moving through warehouses and sitting on shelves. These will be 3/5 eye roots, which is the size we plant ourselves. They have a great balance of value and long-term performance.

Which variety is your favorite?!
🌸 Sarah Bernhardt – Soft blush pink
🌸 Dr. Alexander Fleming – Deep rosy pink
🌸 Shirley Temple – White with a hint of blush
🌸 Bowl of Beauty – Bright pink with a creamy center
🌸 Miss America – Crisp white with golden centers

Roots would arrive in late October/early November for fall planting and range from $18-$22 each, depending on variety.

Every purchase will also come with our Yale Road Flowers peony guide covering planting, growing, harvesting, winter care and all the lessons we’ve learned along the way!

If you’ve been wanting to add peonies to your landscape, remember that a well planted peony can bloom for decades! A quality root is where it all starts. Drop a 🌸 in the comments if you’d be interested!

🏁 It’s officially Gladiolus Race Season around here!

Every year we wait to see which color will be the first to bloom, and this year’s race ended in a tie. 🌸

One is a bright hot pink, while the other leans more magenta. If I remember right, last year’s winner was red.

Gladiolus get their name from the Latin word for “sword” because of their long blade-like leaves. Originally native to Africa, they’ve become a summer favorite in cut flower gardens around the world.

We love glads in bouquets because they add height, color, and keep opening one bloom at a time in the vase.

Now the real question: Team Hot Pink or Team Magenta? 💐🌱

🌸 Yesterday we hosted our very first farm tour at Yale Road Flowers!

A couple of months ago, the Wilson County Conservation District reached out about including us as a stop on their Wildflower Tour. Yesterday, about 20 people made their way out to the farm, and we had a great afternoon sharing what we’ve been building here on Yale Road.

We spent time telling the story of how Yale Road Flowers got started, we discussed peony care and what it takes to grow healthy, disease-free plants, and showed off our high tunnel that we designed and built from scratch.

We also shared some flower industry facts, talked about why so many flowers sold in the United States are imported, and explained what our cornerstone phrase, , really means to us. Supporting local flowers isn’t just about buying a bouquet, it’s about supporting local farms, local dreams and flowers that haven’t traveled thousands of miles to get here.

We wrapped up by sharing some of our future plans for the farm and answering lots of great questions from a group that was genuinely interested in flowers, gardening, and local agriculture.

Thank you to the Wilson County Conservation District and everyone who spent part of their afternoon with us. For our first-ever tour, we’d call it a success. 🌱💐

Happy Subscription Wednesday! 🌸

Today kicks off our summer subscriptions!

We’ve split our bi-weekly subscribers into two groups this year, so if you’re not sure when your first bouquet is scheduled, check your text messages for your start date!

We’re excited that our subscribers will be the first to enjoy this season’s lilies as they begin to bloom. 🌼

Thank you for supporting local flowers, we can’t wait to share another summer of blooms with you! 💐🌱

A quick Yale Road Flowers update 🌱

Over the last few years, we’ve seen increases across just about everything behind the scenes… bulbs, seeds, plugs, soil, packaging and supplies.

We’ve absorbed those increases for as long as we could, but beginning June 1st, our bouquet price will increase from $20 to $25.

Any bouquets or preorders placed before today will be honored at the original pricing, including all subscription bouquets already purchased.

This wasn’t a decision we made lightly. This small increase will allow us to continue growing full, abundant bouquets, investing back into the farm and bringing new varieties and products to Yale Road Flowers.

From tiny seedlings to bouquets on your kitchen table, we’re grateful for every person who chooses local and supports our little farm.

Thank you for helping us keep growing. 🌱💐

Sunday harvest update 🌱

This morning we’re cutting the very first lilies of the season and what may be some of the last campanula. The campanula has been a favorite around here, but the lilies are ready to take their turn in the spotlight.

Also, what a wild storm yesterday! We’re thankful the flowers came through without major damage and hope everyone else can say the same!
