Permaculture design uses nature’s patterns and processes as a blueprint for design. Wrapped up in the intricacies of a magnolia flower bud are many patterns, where form follows function. Concentric circles of petals protect the inside of the bud as it matures, while spirals of stamens make a good use of surface area packed into a small space. What patterns have you seen in nature today?

That is... pulling your w**ds. Now is the time to suppress w**d growth with the practice of sheet mulching! In garden beds, add a layer of newspaper around plants and cover with wheat straw. Around garden beds and on paths, add a layer of plain brown cardboard (make sure to close any sneaky gaps) and cover with wood chip mulch. Weeding can disturb the roots of the plants that you want to grow and shake up the natural layers of your living soil. By mulching, not only will you suppress w**ds, but you’ll also prevent excess evaporation, meaning you won’t need to water as frequently.

Making your home a sanctuary. In these times that call us to stay in place, have we taken the time to examine our relationship with place? Have we taken the time to cultivate not only our sense of place, but also the place itself so that it can cultivate us into resilient and grounded human beings? Permaculture and ecological design are gateways to communing and co-evolving with the non-human world through deep appreciation and observation of the ways that nature continues to expand in the direction of vibrancy and life. 🌿

Those fallen leaves are a treasured, sheltering blanket for the soil and microbes below through our next season: winter. Now is the time to add extra mulch atop your beds, let your leaves rest beneath your trees, and use the heat of compost rings to keep the more tender (and likely non-native) fruit trees thriving through the cold. How are you preparing the land you steward for this cold spell?

Beeeeee houses! Part of our education and outreach includes our local Phyllosophy Class where children learn ecology and pro-social skills as they cultivate a deep appreciation for all non-human beings. Christopher and Luxen are very excited to give bees a home as winter is on its way 🐝
