Diagnostician Dorah found this elm zigzag sawfly on a Siberian elm sample we received from Virginia and named him Ziggy. We try not to get too attached to the pests and pathogens we find at the Diagnostic Clinic but Ziggy stole our hearts! Zigzag sawflies get their name due to the zigzag eating pattern they make through the leaves they eat! Unfortunately, Ziggy has since passed as we must autoclave our samples after we examine them, but we enjoyed watching her devour those leaves! 🐛🌳

Under the microscope at the lab- early-season powdery mildew on crabapple. The infection has caused wilting of the tender new shoots and the fungus is forming textbook-perfect spore chains on the infected tissue.

We take pruning seriously at Bartlett, both on client properties and at the arboretum. Research Lab director Dr. Kelby Fite is reviewing the pruning specs for this feature laurel oak outside the lab buildings with a group of arboretum and lab staff in preparation for pruning today. 🍃🌳🍃
