It’s getting HOT out there and that means your lawn is taking a beating. Here are 4 tips for watering and maintenance during the warmer summer months.
1. WATERING
With a FESCUE lawn, water deeply and infrequently, aiming for 1–1.25 inches per week, split between 2–3 watering sessions. Fescue just doesn’t tolerate heat well and may go dormant, so don’t try to “green it up” by overwatering.
With BERMUDA, it usually requires a little less water, aim for about 1 inch per week total (including rainfall), split between 1-2 watering sessions. It thrives in heat but still benefits from consistent moisture during dry spells.
Pro Tip: Water early in the morning (between 4–8 AM) to reduce evaporation and minimize fungal disease risk.
2. MOWING
For FESCUE, set mower height to 3.5–4 inches to protect roots from the sun and reduce stress during heatwaves.
For BERMUDA, mow a little shorter, 1–2 inches, as it grows laterally and recovers quickly from trimming.
Pro Tip: ALWAYS make sure you mow with sharp blades to avoid tearing the grass (which leads to brown tips and vulnerability to disease.
3. IRRIGATION
Make sure you inspect sprinkler heads and drip lines regularly, even after your regular annual service.
- Clogs, misalignment, and uneven coverage
- Adjust zones to avoid overspray onto driveways or sidewalks
- Install a smart irrigation controller that adjusts to real-time weather and soil moisture
4. FERTILIZATION
For FESCUE, avoid fertilizing in the summer, as it can cause stress and promote disease. Instead, plan to fertilize in early fall to support recovery and root growth.
For BERMUDA, fertilize lightly in mid-July if needed, using a slow-release nitrogen product. Monitor for common summer pests like grubs and armyworms.
As always, we are NOT lawncare experts and these are just general guidelines. It’s always wise to have a lawncare professional as part of your property service network.
