Changing openings in old brick buildings means you have to use old brick. Preferably brick salvaged from the renovation itself. Tedious work to remove the old mortar and weave into the existing brick but the finished result will be worth it.

Changing openings. The work of a renovator always starts with demolition and destruction. But that doesn’t mean that we are reckless. We perform these task with intent and appreciation of what was here before us, including the plant life.

You know you measured correctly and the shop drawings and fabrication were spot on when everything fits in the rafter bay with no room to spare. Putting steel in an existing structure is always a challenge.

Those that know me know that I don’t hesitate to push my tools to the limit. So when Gary was ready to do just that by pushing 1 1/4” quartzite through this saw I jumped in with affirmations and helping hands.

Come Monday we will be attaching our custom brackets to the house and placing our steel beams from the brackets to our columns. Once placed and welded we can add our perlins and we will have a completed structure. Ready for paint, and a motorized awning. Weighing in at 586 lbs per beam I am grateful for good friends. for helping move these through the house and Into the courtyard.

Some days this is the work. Owning the job! Hopefully not owning a problem. Reviewing and marking up shop drawings. These were produced by our fabricator, reviewed by our engineer and then come to me. The contractor. Once i sign off and this goes into fabrication I will own any of the problems that may arise out of miscommunication, inaccurate measurement of lengths and angles and the ability to install it. This is an example of many drawings and specifications that are required to renovate the master bedroom space. Thankfully i love this stuff and i am grateful for the challenge.

For every problem there is a solution. From a basic site drawing to a more elegant CAD drawing to finished product we now have a beautiful structural steel bracket that can adequately support our trellis structure and connect tot to the house.
