The quality of wood (and in our industry, specifically wood decking and fencing) that we have today is not what it was 100 years ago, or even 50 years ago.
Modern forestry practices have brought about faster growth of trees, resulting in wider rings and weaker wood. This new wood we all get at the local lumberyard is less dense and more susceptible to absorbing moisture, rotting, warping, cracking, and twisting. Meticulous maintenance is required to keep this wood in good condition, and even then, its lifespan on average is only 15 years.
SO... if you are considering a project involving exposed wood (fascia, trim, soffit, decking, fencing, etc.) in 2025? Let this be your nudge to consider composite or PVC! Instead of worrying about whether your project will be worth the investment long term (and having the headaches of regular maintenance and repairs), choose a material that will last a lifetime with low-maintenance!
