You don’t see these very often anymore an old-school refrigeration Suction Stop EPR valve. This one is still in operation on a multi-circuit rack at a small town grocery store.

What does it do?

On a multi-circuit rack, multiple compressors maintain one common suction pressure. However, walk-in freezers, ice cream cases, and other refrigerated fixtures all require different suction pressures to maintain proper temperatures.

That’s where the EPR (Evaporator Pressure Regulator) comes in. This valve can be manually adjusted to maintain the desired evaporator pressure for each application.

The Suction Stop feature is unique because it can close off the suction line, allowing the system to perform a hot gas defrost.

Most modern grocery stores now use computer controlled systems with electronic EPR (EEPR) or CDS valves, which are electronic versions of this old mechanical design.

It’s always neat to see these older systems still doing exactly what they were built to do.
