Happy National Cheese Day!🧀🧀 JC PLUMBING & ROOTER 415-947-9675 When you're whipping up that epic, gooey mac and cheese or melting down a masterpiece fondue today, it’s easy to forget about cleanup. Pouring melted cheese, buttery sauces, or cooking oils down the sink might seem harmless when they're hot and liquid. But once they hit your cold underground pipes? They solidify faster than cheddar in a fridge, creating nasty blockages that will completely back up your system.
How to Keep Your Kitchen Gouda All Day Long:
Scrape the Plates: Before you wash your dishes, scrape any leftover cheesy goodness or grease straight into the trash.
Wipe It Down: Use a paper towel to wipe out greasy pans before they hit the sink. Your garbage disposal is not a trash can!
Catch the Crumbs: Use a sink strainer to catch any stray food particles before they slip down the drain.

JC PLUMBING & ROOTER 415-947-9675 Why Correct Diagnosis Matters!?
When a water heater goes out, it's easy to assume you need a brand-new, expensive tank. However, as a professional, my first step is always to read the diagnostics. Replacing a faulty chamber sensor or swapping out a malfunctioning electronic gas control valve can restore your hot water safely and efficiently, saving you the cost of a premature replacement.
Dealing with a blinking red light or running out of hot water?
Don't guess when it comes to gas and electrical components. Give me a call today, and I’ll get your system accurately diagnosed and expertly repaired!

JC PLUMBING & ROOTER 415-947-9675 What Is a Sacrificial Anode Rod?
Water, heat, and steel are a naturally destructive combination. Left unprotected, the steel interior of your water heater tank would rapidly rust, corrode, and split open, leading to a flooded garage or closet.
To prevent this, manufacturers insert a long metal rod—usually made of magnesium or aluminum wrapped around a steel wire core—down through the top of the tank.
Its job is simple: to rust so your tank doesn't.
Through a natural electrochemical process called electrolysis, the water’s corrosive elements attack the magnesium or aluminum of the anode rod first because it is a "less noble" (more chemically active) metal than the steel tank. The rod deliberately sacrifices itself over time, drawing the corrosion away from the tank's steel lining.

JC PLUMBING & ROOTER 415-947-9675 Why Pilot Assemblies Fail (And What to Look For)
Because this assembly sits at the very bottom of the combustion chamber, it operates under constant heat and drafts. Over time, it faces a few common issues:
1. Carbon and Soot Buildup
Gas isn't perfectly clean. Over months and years, a fine layer of black carbon soot can coat the thermopile probe. This soot acts like an insulator. The probe can't get hot enough to generate those vital millivolts, causing the gas valve to snap shut and kill the pilot.
2. A "Lazy" Pilot Flame
A healthy pilot flame should be sharp, steady, and bright blue, completely wrapping around the tip of the sensor probe. If dust gets sucked into the pilot hood, the flame becomes weak, yellow, and "lazy." A yellow flame doesn't produce enough concentrated heat, meaning the sensor will think the pilot went out.
3. Worn Out Safety Wiring
The wires running from the assembly back to the valve (including the bimetal switch wire safety loop) are exposed to high temperatures. If these wires become brittle, loose, or corroded, the electrical signal drops, triggering an automatic safety lockout.

JC PLUMBING & ROOTER 415-947-9675 Anatomy of a Burner Assembly
Looking at the assembly pulled out on the mat, you can see several critical components that work together to safely heat your water:
The Burner Screen/Grid: The large, rectangular, curved surface with the mesh pattern is the main burner. This is where gas mixes with air and ignites into a clean, blue flame directly beneath your water tank.
The Main Gas Feed Tube: The aluminum tube leading into the back of the burner delivers the precise amount of gas regulated by your control valve.
The Pilot and Thermopile/Thermocouple Line: Mounted right on the side of the main burner grid is the pilot assembly. The white insulated wires run back from the sensor (thermopile or thermocouple) and the electronic igniter, communicating directly with the gas valve to ensure gas only flows when it's safe.

JC PLUMBING & ROOTER 415-947-9675 What Does the Gas Control Valve Actually Do?
Think of this valve as the brain and safety manager of your water heater. It handles three major tasks:
Regulates Gas Flow: It safely manages the flow of gas to the pilot and the main burner assembly.
Monitors Temperature: It senses the internal tank temperature to know exactly when to fire up and when to shut down, keeping your water at a comfortable, safe setting.
Safety Lockout: It constantly monitors the safety circuits—like the thermopile and the bimetal switch wire—to shut down the gas immediately if something goes wrong.
