Back for a second summer interning with MEB, Taylor Ervin worked on the NAVFAC Norfolk Naval Shipyard P-1062 Dry Dock 3 Modernization project, building on the experience he gained last year.

As a Virginia Tech Construction Management major, he gained hands-on experience in both the field and the office, from documenting progress and taking measurements to reviewing plans, ordering materials, and working on submittals. Along the way, he was supported by a project team that made the experience even more meaningful.

Watch this 50,000-pound reactor be installed at Charlotte Water’s McAlpine Creek Wastewater Management Facility Nutrient Harvesting project in under a minute in this time-lapse video!

The reactor could not be installed through a completed roof, so it had to be set before building er****on could begin. Because it was fabricated upside down, Superior Cranes, Inc. operated two cranes in tandem to flip, rotate, and set the vessel on its support columns.

MEB recently joined the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Headquarters, the Montana Air National Guard, and project partners for the ribbon-cutting ceremony of the new Petroleum, Oils & Lubricants (POL) Fuel Facilities Complex in Great Falls, Montana!

The project replaces an approximately 70-year-old underground fuel system with modern aboveground storage and fueling infrastructure.

Some of the project highlights include:

🔶 Two 50,000-gallon UL 2085 aboveground jet fuel storage tanks
🔶 New truck fill and off-load stations, a POL operations and fuels lab building, and a government vehicle fueling station
🔶 Offloading capacity designed to increase from 200 to 600 GPM
🔶 Fuel truck filling capacity designed to increase from 280 to 600 GPM

Thank you to the MEB team, USACE, the Montana Air National Guard, and all project partners whose field work and coordination brought the project to this milestone.

We’re spotlighting James White, Tim Engel, Luis Ramos, Corey Jollie, and Markel Byrd currently on the HRSD Nansemond TP SWIFT Facility & On-site Recharge Wells project for their commitment to safety and consistent performance they bring to every assignment as a crew.

Chad Howell, Project Utility Superintendent, shared, “Their ability to communicate effectively, collaborate seamlessly, and maintain a positive team dynamic is recognized by everyone they work with. Despite the challenges of moving between four different job sites, they remain flexible, productive, and committed to maintaining the highest standards of safety and quality. They are an outstanding representation of MEB.”

Work is advancing both within the structure footprint and along the main road at the SCWWA Wastewater Treatment Plant Nutrient Reduction Improvements - Phase 5 project

🔶 Pile driving complete - roughly 288 piles

🔶 Excavation underway around the structure footprint to reach the next bench elevation

🔶 Preparations underway to install the remaining tiebacks within the horseshoe layout

🔶 Installation underway on roughly 2,300 feet of primary duct bank along the main road, including two large conduits and multiple vaults

🔶 New gas line installation progressing above the duct bank, with suitable excavated material reused for backfill and unsuitable material hauled offsite

This work supports the larger effort to construct a new BMR tank and clarifiers, renovate existing treatment facilities, and complete extensive piping, mechanical, electrical, and site improvements. Stay tuned as our team continues to make progress!

As part of the Dewatering Replacement Phase 3 & 4 project, the calcium carbonate storage and feed system at HRSD’s Virginia Initiative Plant has been installed and is ready for final commissioning!

HRSD senior leadership shared more about what this system means for the plant:

“The calDENSE process pilot study at the HRSD Army Base Treatment Plant has shown evidence that calcium carbonate addition can be a viable solution not only for reducing CO2 volatilization from biological treatment, but also for improving process stability and settling behavior. CaCO3 addition (potentially with hydrocyclones in the future) represents a potential strategy for intensifying the VIP treatment process while contributing to CO2 emissions reduction, both of which have significant value. Specifically, installation of this calSTORE system is part of an overall strategy to comply with new Total Phosphorus limits that will go into effect in 2032. Completion of this project also allows HRSD to continue to collaborate with Crew Carbon for obtaining credits through the addition of CaCO3 to the treatment process.”
