What happens and what do I do when a tree falls on my house, car, shed, yard, pool, or any covered item. We get asked this question a lot! Who do I call first?
Your first call should be to your insurance provider to put a claim in. Take pictures, and tell them what has happened. This gets the ball rolling on their end, gets you a claim number, and allows you to move forward on your next steps.
Who do we call to remove the tree or trees?
Call a local trusted tree service provider that will help you during this difficult time. Make sure they have the right equipment to remove what is needed safely and without further damage to your home. Also, ask them if there will be upfront costs. The last thing a homeowner wants to hear is they owe a ton of money to a company while their house is in shambles or damaged. Mitigating any further loss to your home is your responsibility. The tree service provider should also offer to tarp any exposed areas to the house or property. If heavy rain is in the forecast this would be a recipe for disaster.
What if my insurance agent tells us we need three prices before we hire anyone?
In an emergency situation your family’s safety is number one priority. If any agent says that, kindly ask them to put that in writing and to have them show you in your policy where it stats that. This is something insurance companies will do unfortunately.
What is a covered item?
In most policy’s covered items consists of your home, other structures on the property (shed, detached garage, fence, pools, gazebos), personal property, (furniture, playground/swingset, grills, and tools). These are all items that would be covered if a claim was needed.
Is there something we can do to prevent this from happening to us?
Regular healthy pruning, safety inspections, and plant health care on your trees will minimize your likelihood of having an emergency like this. But unfortunately anything can happen with severe weather.
