My best friend stole my husband after my miscarriage and invited me to her baby shower, saying, "Shame you couldn't give him one" — but what my MIL did at the party left everyone stunned.
Marcus was still my husband when I lost our first baby at eleven weeks. That same week, I found out he’d been sleeping with Chloe — my best friend of 14 years.
He called me "barren" and left. The only person from his family who stayed in my life was Linda, his mother.
So when Chloe’s invitation arrived in a blush-pink envelope, I knew opening it was a mistake. Inside was a photo of Marcus's hand spread over her belly. It was an invitation to their baby shower.
At the bottom, Chloe had written in tiny silver ink:
"Shame you couldn't give him one. ;)"
I dropped it straight into the trash.
Then my phone buzzed. It was Linda. She didn't even say hello.
"Pack a dress and fly here tonight. I found something in Chloe's nursery. SHE'S BEEN LYING to all of us."
The next morning, Chloe's house was drowning in balloons, gold teddy bears, and women whispering into plastic cups of punch.
Chloe saw me and smiled like a pageant queen.
"Oh my God, you came," she said loudly. "That's so BRAVE!"
Marcus wouldn't meet my eyes.
Linda stood near the gift table, perfectly still, one hand on a silver-wrapped box.
When Chloe began opening presents, she lifted a tiny onesie and cooed, "Marcus says the baby already has his nose."
A few guests laughed.
Then Linda stepped forward.
"Actually," she said, loud enough to make the room go quiet, "Megan and I brought one more gift."
Chloe's smile flickered.
Linda placed the silver box in her lap.
"Open it, sweetheart."
Chloe peeled back the paper. Her fingers stopped moving.
Inside wasn't a baby gift. No greeting cards. No sweets.
"If you thought you could build your happiness on someone else's misery, you were wrong," Linda said.
Then she opened the window. From the yard came a heavy thud.
And that was when I realized karma hadn't just arrived.
It knew Chloe's name. ⬇️
