This week’s What I Learned This Week comes from Joe DiMartino—and it’s a good reminder that architecture involves a whole lot more than what happens in Revit.

Joe spent more time in the code book than behind the drawing board this week, digging into the rules, requirements, and limitations that determine what can actually be built before design really begins.

And his second lesson of the week? Structural glass is exactly as expensive as it sounds. 😅

It’s always exciting to see how a piece of St. Louis history can take on new life. What was once a bustling retail hub at 6th & Locust — home to a major downtown department store back in 1957 — has transformed into something completely different, yet still full of energy and connection.

HDA had the honor of designing ANEW Rooftop, a stunning indoor-outdoor event space perched atop the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Missouri building at 519 N. Grand Blvd. With 4,250 SF of rooftop views and 2,250 SF of indoor dining space, it’s a modern, flexible venue designed to bring people together right in the heart of the Grand Center Arts District.

You never know what a simple question might teach you.

For this week’s What I Learned This Week, Senior Project Manager Colleen Nigro took a deeper dive into the history behind our city’s namesake—and discovered there was much more to Saint Louis than his title as King of France.

From his commitment to serving those in need to reforms that helped shape ideas of justice still recognized today, it’s a reminder that there’s always more to learn about the history around us.

Designed to support rapid regional growth and long-term expansion, the new facility more than doubles the size of L & F’s previous location.
