Theres a little more than meets the eye on this one. The retaining wall was leaning because water wasn’t draining properly behind it, so we dug it out, corrected the drainage, and shored up the wall. We also refreshed the planting area with a new row of shrubs—because fixing the problem underneath and making it look good are important!

One of the things we’ve come to appreciate most about this work is the people we get to meet.

You show up to work on a home or business, and before long you’re hearing the story behind it; maybe it’s the home where they raised their kids and built a lifetime of memories, or the business they took a chance on years ago and poured everything they had into.

Those conversations and the people behind them have become one of our favorite parts of the job.

These days, everything costs more. We all feel it, and we know nonprofits are feeling it too.

You can buy the most beautiful well-built shed on the market, but if you set it straight on your lawn, nature is bound to take over and win.

Grass holds moisture. Dirt shifts over time. Wood rots.

If you're thinking about adding a shed this fall, don't start with the building—start with the ground underneath it.
Step 1: Dig out the top layer. Clear away the grass and soft dirt until you hit firm soil.
Step 2: Lay a gravel base. Pack down crushed rock so water drains away easily and your shed stays completely level.
Step 3: Keep the wood off the dirt. Elevating the floor frame keeps wet ground from rotting out the bottom of your shed.

If you do the prep work right the first time, your shed will stay dry, level, and solid for decades.

A great estimate isn't just about the price tag—it’s about accountability.
In Wyoming, general contractor licensing is handled at the local level, which means standards can vary widely depending on who you call.

Before you sign a contract or hand over a deposit, do your research and verify these three things:
1. Are they licensed with the city?
Municipal licensing requires passing exams, registering the business, and showing proof of qualifications. An unlicensed contractor might save a few bucks upfront, but it can create major legal and permit headaches for you later.

2. Do they carry active liability and workers' comp insurance?
If an uninsured worker gets hurt on your property or damages your house, your homeowner's insurance could end up on the hook. Always ask to see a Certificate of Insurance.

3. Will they be around next year if something fails?
Out-of-state or "fly-by-night" crews show up, take quick cash, and vanish before winter hits. Ask how long they've been operating locally. If a fence sags or a line freezes in January, you need to know they'll pick up the phone.

A reputable builder will never hesitate to show you their proof of insurance, local license, and references. Protect your investment before work begins!

Have you been thinking about planting trees or bushes before winter hits? If you answered yes, please make sure to read this post first.

Late August/early fall is actually a great time to plant in Wyoming, as long as you don't make the classic late-season mistakes.

Before you buy those end-of-season clearance trees or bushes, ask yourself these 3 questions:
1️⃣Will the roots actually establish before the freeze?
If you plant too late or don't water properly right up until the ground freezes, our harsh winter will kill that root system before spring ever stands a chance.
2️⃣Can it handle 60 mph winter winds and heavy snow loads?
That beautiful nursery bush might look great now, but if it snaps under ice or dehydrates in dry winter wind, it’s a wasted investment.
3️⃣What is it going to look like next April?
A landscape isn't successful just because it survives August. It’s successful if it comes back strong after sub-zero temperatures and a wet, heavy spring melt.

Don't buy for how a plant looks today. Buy for how it will survive Wyoming's winter.

A leaning fence doesn't automatically mean it's time for a new one.

Here are some things to look for if you have a leaning fence:
Wood: Look for rot, moisture damage, deterioration near the ground, loose soil, or a post losing stability.
Metal: Look for corrosion, weakened sections, loose connections, or movement at the ground.
Vinyl: Look for cracked sections, loose connections, leaning posts, or movement caused by temperature changes.

Before making any big decisions, find out what needs to be replaced. Do your research, gather materials, and get it fixed before it becomes a bigger issue.

Most property damage doesn’t happen overnight; it sneaks up in plain sight.

We recommend taking a short 10 minutes to walk around your property at least once a month.

Keep an eye out for things like:
Standing water near foundations (water always wins)
Fresh cracks or ground settling (small shifts now = structural headaches later)
Leaning fence posts or heavy dead limbs (one storm away from a costly mess)
Soil erosion (washed-away ground is washed-away value)

Snap a time-stamped photo of anything off. You don't need to fix everything immediately—you just need to catch a $100 problem today before it turns into a $10,000 emergency six months from now.

Spot it early. Protect your investment.
